torson diff...second hand or new
hello
i am going to add a torson diff to the nba.... as mixxy becomes a sicker little rabbit week by week
....new ones at the mania are $1500, old ones are obviously less
are there any potential wearing out issues with second hand torsion diffs?
also what is the best ratio..problems /advantages.?..i gather the standard is 4.1...3.9 makes you accelarate faster....4.3 makes it longer legged...but the speedo reads low
enjoy

Hi Mate,
MX5Plus have a few different ratios to choose from if you go the second hand route. You could get it shipped in the same pallet as the roll hoops.
Justa thought.

other way around mate - the lower the end ratio the longer the gearing. I would stick with 4.1 unless you are going to have over 300hp at which point you would probably need longer gearing to make use of the torque. For the money you are looking at I would get a kaaz 1.5 clutch type. they are 750 new from japan and are a better option to the torsen from what I can tell.

Thanks 16bit. Yeah that price seems tolerable. I called a wrecker and was quoted $850 for the second-hand Torsens when they had them, but they didn't have any at the time. So if I'm going to pay in that ballpark then I may as well have something designed for racing.
Do the people doing the swap need to really know what they are doing (ie. can someone do a good job/bad job or once it's in will it be ok?)

marrying the crown to the Pin & diff is the tricky bit. it has to be pretty exact.
Once someone has been shown how to do it properly, its probably a walk in the park. But its probably best left to the professionals. As I certainly wouln't like to have my diff as a gunea pig.
You could probably take the parts to the pros. get them to put the crown wheel on & then install the diff yourself. If you are that way inclined. But I think $300 is about the going price for installation of the diff & changing over the crown wheel.

Hm... didn't see anyone answer this question. I'm curious of the answer too.

anything that moves, wears out or has the potential to wear out.
Like someone said if you put 200rwkw down on the drag strip......it has the potential to break. Your standard or slightly modded NA/B it should last a very long time without needing maintenance.

Yeah, but the wear rate of intermeshing gears is significantly less than that of say clutch plates rubbing against each other.

what he said^^. clutch types need to be serviced and rebuilt. torsens should last a very very long time if they are looked after and not over powered. massive hp and drag strip launches will break them quicker.

Opposite I should say, 4.3 is lower gearing = more revs = more acceleration = less top speed, yes?
