2 I dont think the oil filter has a magnet??

3 Is there any benifits of havin a magnetic oil plug like they have on the diff??

4 Where can I get a magnetic oil plug for the MX5 (NB8B)

i got mine off ebay last year, still very magnetic. i spose it's useful for attracting metal particles in the oil if there is any.

i'd be more interested in a GB for a Fumoto oil pan drain valve instead, especially if one can also be found for the diff & gearbox as well.

i'm up got a GB.

i thought it was strange how the gearbox & diff drain plugs are magnetic, but the sump isn't.

Diff and gearbox have a magnet because they do not have a filter. In the engine your filter should take care of things, I reckon regular oil and filter changes are the more important than a magnetic sump plug.

Wun if you want a magnet on your oil filter get a couple of magnets out of a computer hard drive and put them on your filter. Much cheaper than things like this http://www.filtermag.com/tech.php.

Wun,
The magnetic plugs are heavier than the standard ones too.

IMPORTANT
Firstly determine which oil you are using before recklessly fitting a magnetic engine sump plug.
A unnamed forumite fitted the aforementioned plug to his (previously) immaculate crystal blue SP
and destroyed the top end of his motor within 50kms of driving.
Upon investigation it was found that he was using Castrol Magnatec oil, which in itself is quite good, but with the new advanced
oil formulation it was attracted by the magnetic sump plug and stayed pooled in the sump.
Be warned.

That's just silly, it could happen but depending on the polarity of the magnet it could repel all the oil to the top of the motor. Good for the top end but would starve the bottom end of oil. You need to do more research before making such statements FFG.

Good point Bruce.
I think the aforementioned unnamed forumite had a south pole magnetic sump plug.
Hence the top end wear.
If it was the reverse then his bottom end would go...
That reminds me of another SP owner, but that is another story

Magnetic oil sump plug
Can anyone confirm if pretty much all MX-5s, 6, 3 etc share the same thread width and pitch?

I'll set up a GB if you guys want.

I've sent the seller questions already

There are some whacky things being said here. Magnatec is not attracted by magnets - does it even sound remotely possible? Ring the Castrol technical service- how does an ester wear addiitive get attracted by a magnet- try it for yourself. Would a co of this stature put out a product which could not be used wherever a magnetic sump plug was installed? When products are designed they use fmea's( failure mode effect analysis) and all possible failure modes are considered. The story of the SP I would reject wholly as an urban myth- the root cause has not been divulged.
As for the subject itself what benefit does anyone think they can get from such a product and why don't OE manuf bother?

 That's one of the funniest ones yet, Magnetic oil
Even if it was you would need a powerfull electromagnet to hold all the oil in the sump.

I thought the primary reason for magnetic sump plugs is that if something goes bang in the motor you could confirm whether you still had all four pistons intact without having to pull the head and/or sump apart.

Pistons are aluminium-non magnetic.
IMHO It is to stop the metal that wears from circulating around the engine and doing more damage.
