AVO mania prices: GT2560R turbo (200sx)
NA6 stage 1 105wkw 5-6psi $4730
NA6 stage 2 134wkw 11psi $6050
NA6 stage 3 151wkw
NA8 stage 1 similar pwr as nb8? $5600
NB8 stage 1 122wkw 5-6psi (close to what op wants) $4700
NB8 stage 2 153wkw 11psi $6050

How do these at the wheel Kw stats compare to the factory at the wheel outcome? Are the numbers quoted here at the fly wheel or the wheels? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_MX-5 This will help me understand how much extra grunt I'd get.

These figures are at the wheels. Hence the wkw (wheel kilowatts) after the figure or rwkw (rear wheel kilowatts). I think drivetrain loss is about 30% (please feel free to correct me if I am wrong) which would mean a power figure of 100rwkw is roughly 150kw at the flywheel. Most people use wkw figures because they are easy to measure on a dyno whereas flywheel figures need to be measured on an engine dyno which means pulling the engine out. Hope this helps you out

Ben

Wow its not 30% loss. Its about 10% + 10hp for cars under 250hp from memory, I'll double check tomorrow. So 100kw is like 117kw at the flywheel.

Look I am really no expert on this matter but I love cars and have for the last 20 years of my life. I realise that it is not an exact multiplication that you can use to determine fkw from wkw but your figure seems excessively low whereas on reflection my figure seems possibly a bit high. Doing a bit of research it seems most people will put the figure somewhere between 20 and 30 % drivetrain loss. For example NA6 is rated at 88fkw and the most common wkw is around 55. The sp is rated at 156(?)wkw but commonly gets around 115wkw. Anyway my point is that it is up to interpretation but I think 20-30% sounds good or 25% to average them out :D

I think the answer is if i want grunt for my $$$$ I will have to go for an already turboed NA6 or NA8. I can stretch to an NB8a with bolt on bits that are not forced induction but I won't get the grunt. I want the grunt. :)

55kw is pretty low for an NA but you have to take into account the dyno accuracy, and also the fact that NA's are almost as old as me, most cars that have been dyno'd would have 100km+, surely that would affect the results.
Also where are you getting the whole most NA's dyno at 55wkw data from?
Not that its that important but isnt the NA6 rated at 86fkw?

I remember talking to David at Mania a while back and he mentioned that he'd expect an average NA6 gets around 55-60rwkw on their dyno. That was a couple of years ago, so maybe its been recalabrated since then??

Reminds me of that Top Gear episode where Jeremy and the guys got some very average dyno results from the $10k quid exotics that had seen better days

He already contacted me. It is a very nice car. I am thinking about it. I really wanted a silver NA. A set up turbo one went on carpoint a few months ago in Tassie. 8) Missed out. :frown:
