From what I can Gather customer service seems to lack a little with PWR. Or they just don't understand the concept of it.

Caffeine wrote:PWR quote $770 direct from them. It's pretty stupid that they can export it 1/2 way round the world, and i can buy it, and ship it back 1/2 way round the world again, for cheaper than they'll sell it to me directly

You'll find the same with most Aussie performance stuff. They basically dont want to crap on thier distributors here in Australia, many even have signed agreements that state they will not sell to the general public at anything other than RRP.

With this in mind you may find that if you can get hold of a reseller (say Mania or your local radiator guy) they will actually sell you a PWR cheapr than PWR will cause they can discount a little to secure a sale whereas the manufacturer has the above mentioned agreement to preclude them from selling cheap. If the manufacturers all sold cheap to us directly, they would upset the distributors/resellers who would probably then start to push a different product.

It's therefore in PWRs best interests to have bugger all customer service direct to the public. I called them ages ago when building an RX7, and they suggested I contact a specific shop (cant recall who the shop was) who were the local reseller and sold a lot of PWR RX7 stock. All went well with the local shop.

Yeah but the Aussie wholesale cost (which I got after I had already ordered mine from FM) was still a fraction more expensive than mine landed in Australia.

I guess they give a discount to suppliers who order X amount of units like Flyin Miata.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Looks like about $650 landed for the PWR...

Still cheaper than PWR will sell direct

I contacted them and they didn't believe I could get it cheaper, so I gave them the links & shipping, info, and they went all quiet.

Maybe when the AUD was ~55c US it would have been a valid pricing scheme, not any more though!

Sean I think has explained it pretty well. Many manuf do not sell direct and their distributors are buying at significant discounts compared to retail. A 60% disc is not at all unusual. Similarly OE component suppliers sell to car co's at prices often a quarter of what we pay over the counter for spare parts. Buying thru the trade if you have the contacts can save money. Importing has the added danger of not being able to negotiate a practical warranty issue.
