Handbrake + Gear knob Gaiter/Boot install

Postby li21 » Tue Apr 15, 2008 11:52 am

Hi all,

I just got a set of handbrake and gear knob gaiters and rubber tunnel boots.
Just wanted to ask a few questions before I attempt installing.

a) I know how to put in the gear shift gaiter and boot.. but is it necessary to suck out all that gunk and old gearbox oil? Seems messy and I'm pront to spilling stuff all the time.
I'm just wondering do places like MX5Mania do this for you anyway at Gearbox oil service?

b) How do I put on the leather handbrake cover? I tried to slip it on, seems very tight. Do I remove the factory plastic cover first? or is it designed to slip on top?

c) If I wanted to change the top/handle of the hand brake , how do I remove the factory plastic handle?

Thanks guys!:)

a) use a syringe or turkey baster to try and suck out the old oil. This should eliminate any spillage that will occur. It is not necessary to suck it out and replace it but it is recommended. I would have thought that a place like Mania that specialise in Mx5's would do this but you would have to ask.

b) You can either remove the plastic cover or keep it on depending on what you prefer. I kept mine on as it gives a fuller look to it. It will slip on over the top but it will generally be tight as well

c) The handle is attached by glue. You need to break the seal that the glue has. All I did was grip it and twist and that was enough to get it off. After the glue seal has been broken it comes off fairly easy

Mazda make nice aluminum hand break goes well with voodoo knob.

(voodoo hand break is nice but hard to find and I dont think comes with button)

Silicone is a good adhesive for new hand break

Only problem is aluminum hand break is about 7 grams more than stock plastic one.

You might like benny's boots, very soft leather nice to touch.

BTW if you are 6spd NB8B you dont need the turky baster...
every ounce counts
