My thoughts exactly, if you think your MX-5 may be different from all the others, join your local club and get some other NC owners to drive it and see if it handles any differently.

Were your other MX-5s modified? The NC is a bigger beast with those child bearing hips and bigger wheels, it may seem a little more whale like but it should stick as good as a stock NA/NB if not better.

NMX516 wrote:Spag you might be surprised at what a good alignment can do for you... Having one isn't a "mod" as such, and a decent alignment isn't going to make it tricky or anything for the mrs to drive. I would be very surprised if any new MX5 has a decent alignment off the showroom floor....

I agree, go to a proper suspension shop that has a drive on computerised setup.

Most manufactures have tolerances the alignment needs to fall within, a GOOD suspension shop will have tigher tolerances on what they feel is a good setup.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Sounds like your cars problems are more severe than just an alignment issue. I'd be pissed off big time plonking down so much money on an NC to have it handle as you say it does ( considering I just spent under $20K on a standard NB8A (bigger wheels/tyres) with 75,000km's that handles like on rails, with more grip than I'd ever use ). Wonder if one of the shocks is letting the plot down? You wouldn't think so with your km's, but stranger things have happened. Good luck sorting it out.

Spaghetti you must be having a wow of a time in the come in spinner routine. I would take your comments as pushing credibility and clearly if you think MX5's handle badly for road condtions then you are clearly mistaken. It does not make any sense that the handling of your car is so atrocious and that the dealer would not be able to identify a serious shortcoming. Road tests extol the virtues of the car. If you have a problem with the car do what any other new car buyer would do - take it up with dealer/Mazda Aust

Like you said Mr Morlock, if he isn't satisfied he should take it up with the dealer (and he did) but he didn't seem to get a satisfactory answer, (we should all know that some dealerships don't exactly have the clearest idea of customer service) so he's just exploring the other avenues and options (by coming here and asking us)
He knows that the MX5 should be much better sorted than what he is finding right now... so he's here asking why!

But I digress... and onwards to my point...
Some of you might remember that Best Motoring New Roadster video clip someone posted up about a week or two ago?
It reminded me of all the things that have been written about the NC MX5... written in Motor (OK not so credible...) but in Evo mag, as well as the Best Motoring reviews/test drives etc., they have all noted some bizarre handling characteristics of the NC compared to the previous iterations
Can anyone offer an opinion as to why? (I'm genuinely curious here... I'm not trying to step on anyones toes)

To the OP,
DO NOT say anything negative about the MX5 on this board. EVER.
You have been warned.

Jesus. My missues used to visit this site when she had her last Mx5. She was in the mx5 club and numerous events at Morwell, Winton Sandown, etc. In fact, I think she gave a set of 16" R tyres to someone here when she got her Wrx. She suggested this would be a good place to get information about her new car- ie, if anyone knows, these guys will know.

As Ive obviously not been clear- I think the mx5 is the most fun you can have fully clothed. I dont think Mx5s handle badly, I think THIS mx5 handles badly. As I see you are in Melbourne, Id be happy to meet you at PI or Sandown and we can swap notes about what "handling" means . Bring your Mx5, I'll bring my Carrera or the rx7 Targa car, and we can see who is clearly mistaken about handling.

But enough p1ssing contest. Im just looking for information. If your personal incredulity does not allow you to contemplate that the problem ive described exists withe then current mx5- or some of them perhaps, thats fine- it just means we have different ideas about sports cars.

Mate; I have to say I feel very sorry for you. Firstly, you have an MX5 which is clearly not right, then you ask people who might have experience for advice and get shat on.

You guys are out of line: READ THE THREAD before you post.

I hope you get some more sensible posts in future.

I was thinking it would be very easy for the dealer to save a few dollars and just tell you they had the alignment checked (while you cat say in their carpark all day).

Did they give you a print out of the before and after alignment figures?

It would be interesting to compare you alignment stats with other NC owners.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

would you not agree Geoff, there are ways to go about asking for help, & ways NOT to go about asking for help?

you know me well enough by now to know that if ANYONE genuinely asks me for a hand, they get it. no questions asked.

Actually, I was going to make a point of bringing this up at the next run. I found your post unlike you and very defensive. I think you got the wrong impression entirely. I'll send you a PM instead.

But yes, you are always willing to share wisdom...

That seems a little disingenuous. Ive re-read the original post that seems to have so incurred your ire and for the life of me I cant see what you are so upset about. Ive stated the facts as I see the them, offered some background on my history with this car and MX5s generally, asked for opinions from people on this Mx5 web board who have some experience with the Mx5 chassis.

Im at a loss to understand what you find "negative and snotty" i think you said? -about this. Must be that I said my Mx5 is a handling dog. Its a just a car, mate. I wasnt talking about your sister.

You have provided no indication that you do in fact know anything about the Mx5 chassis, and you just seem intent on having a whine. Please find another thread to do it.

on a positive note, have you wandered down to a Mazda dealership and taken another MX5 out for a blat. Least you'll know if the problems are only with your car or it is as the service guy has suggested \"no fault can be found\".
