I'm also contemplating at fitting it myself. But after looking at this thread, it might be best that I just pay MX5 Mania the $70 they charge to fit the darn thing.

Is the location of the NB horn in the same spot as the NA in the pics on this thread?

$70

yeah mate, same location..

thing with NB is, the wiring has been sticky taped with other wires so its a hassle.. taking off the front bar would make the job much easier, but i'm not too sure whether anyone has the time for that

I'm afraid so Andrew. It seems getting it professionally fitted will cost nearly twice as much as the unit itself :frown:

I saw MX5 Mania fit one to an NC two weeks ago, and they simply hoisted the car up and accessed the horn from underneath. No need to take the bumper off - which is my preference.

There is no need to remove the bumper whatsoever and you dont need to hoist the car up either. Fatty had the bumper off cause he was fidgeting with his AC.
But having said that, if you are not electrically minded and if Mania will make a bracket for you, then $70 isn't bad.

1. I haven't got a hoist
2. I'm not electrically/mechanically minded
3. Mania is a pretty far drive from where I am
4. I'm doomed

10 minutes with a hammer, vice, drill and some scrap aluminum will result in this -

mounts in the OEM horn position for an NB.

You're not doomed sliqmeister.
It's not that daunting.
Even an electrical dunder-head like myself could have done it, but it would have taken 4 times longer than tbro and 1/4 as neat.

Wait for the next Dodgy Day and take some beer with you as payment (actually, the beer will cost you $700!)

OK guys, I received my Stebel Nautilus Compact Dual air horn from the post today.

Now I just need to contemplate if:

A. Spend the whole weekend fitting the darn thing (plus several trips to Bunning and/or Supercheap Auto for supplies), and keeping in mind I'm no auto electrician.

or

B. Book to get it fitted by mania for $70.

Hmmmmm :?

I'm at Marsfield (Near North Ryde). But I'm leaning towards getting Mania to do it for me.

I'm fine with making the bracket and the like, but not too sure about the wiring stuff.

Sliq if you are feeling uncomfortable about doing it you can always go to a auto electrician. You do not have to be a Mazda expert to fit horns. Trained people do these things every day and most good mechanics also understand wiring/ relays and the like. Many guys with the best restored cars never do a thing themselves. Ask for a quote first.

Hi Sliq

I just got an update from Mania about fitting the horn. Apparently for an NB8B, they don't need to remove the bumper, so fitting will cost somewhere between $30-40.

With that, I would say, save all the hassles and just get mania to fit it. I'm looking at getting mine fitted this Saturday afternoon. All depends what time I can get back home from a mornings MTB ride @ Terrey Hills.
