I also emailed Karatan enclosures in NSW who make custom corner enclosures as to whether they would do a cheap run of sealed FG enclosures to suit NB MX-5 if we provided a donor car for the fitout.

how much are you willing to pay for a FG enclosure?? 8)

Who in NSW would be willing to let the fabricator use their car for exact measurements to make these boxes? I would use my SE, but i'm in Melbourne :(

I'm in Brisbane or else i would let them use my car

they need the car to actually do the job inside it so they'd need it for a full day i'd assume

SM, what sort of money would you be happy with to create more of those?

The company in Sydney have confirmed they would need an NB MX-5 for a full day to take all the dimensions for the first box.
If we get 5 orders, they will do them for around $235 + postage, complete/carpeted with gold terminals, ready to go.

That is damn cheap for a custom FG enclosure!

I don't really have the time I just thought you would be interested in knowing what it takes to make one and the cost of materials
although it would be easier to make it flat because you wouldn't need to go through the extra fibreglassing for the front face

some questions you should get answered before going ahead with the group buy
how is it anchored? (very important)
what size sub is it going to be made for? (also note that not all subs are the same size, different companies have different rulers it seems and are mounted different ways, 6/8 screws and some are flush mounted)
how many layers will they be using?
internal volume? (this matters alot as some subs will not be happy in a small sealed enclosure)
number of terminals? (2 or 4)

probably some more that I haven't thought of yet

and don't forget you need to mount the amp somewhere

but yes it's the best price I've seen for this type of enclosure (I looked at paying someone to do mine)

Just to confirm for those who have doubts, the sub is from the Focal KX range.

This particular subwoofer line contains models ranging in size from 11" (smallest) to 18" (largest) - so it can't possible be smaller then 11".

Also i did see this car in person through various stages of the installation so I can definately confirm that it is indeed an 11"

I'm interested to see what Karatan say about the box. I got the guy there to build my sub box for me and it was at quite a good price. However I didn't see him doing any fibreglassing type work at the time. Only wooden boxes. So I wonder whether he'll do fibreglass?

I went a bit silly with mine this weekend

had a sub and amp sitting around that was in my Turbo EA before I sold it; so built a box and put it in the 5 temporarily.

Hey slo,

It just bolts down, sitting on top of the fuel tank parcel shelf.

Its made just deep enough to fit the 10inch sub.

Check out my home page (click on the www at the bottom of this post), and you'll see my sub enclosure.
It is an 8\" Alpine sub, and to be frank with you, the MX-5 doesn't need anything bigger than a decent 8\".
As it is, the bass can really vibrate you quite a bit, but it doesn't have any buzzes that aren't supposed to be there.
The box is easily removeable by the removal of just the one screw, and looks so neat, that srutineers at race tracks haven't picked it out as being removable (although I do take it out at the track).

Sure you might be able to fit in a 12\" or even a 15\" sub, but you are just wanking if you do, as an 8\" is plenty.

If anyone wants to listen to my system (and I reckon it is really VERY good, even if I say so myself) let me know when you'll be around Sydney and we can hook up.

I've been an audiophile for over 35 years and I reckon my system sounds as good if not better than any other system I've heard in a car, including my Mercedes with the optional high-end Bose system.

Luke, that looks pretty neat! What happens when the softop is folded down? Especially those who have glass rear windows?
