Thinking of cleaning it?

Yanks reckon by cleaning it out, it improves idle and engine start.

just trying to make ASE05 run a lil' cooler.

- Oil cooler
- Radiator bypass mod
- Aftermarket radiator
- Holes in the front bumper

I havent done mine yet, havent needed to. I believe Garry cleaned his out recently perhaps msg him.

if so, how do i clean it?

Tools Required:
Philips head screw driver.
12mm socket, and rachet.
Can of Carb Cleaner
Lubricating oil.

1. First off this is what you want to look for.. You will find it on the back of the intake plenum. It's your EGR valve.

Image

2. Next lets remove the two 12mm bolts that attach this to the intake plenum.. First bolt.

Image

3. Second bolt..

Image

4. Once you have the EGR valve off, keep track of the bolts and metal gasket by re-inserting them in the plenum.

Image

5. Now this little valve can be the source of many idle stability, and starting issues if not regularly cleaned.

Image

6. Now we don't want to just start drowning this valve in carb cleaner yet.. because there is a electronic solenoid thingy attached and we don't want to damage it.. because that would be bad.
So lets pull out the philips screw driver ( make sure is kinda stout at the tip because otherwise you will strip the screws) and get to work.

Image

7. There are a total of four screw that you will need to remove.

Image

8. Once all the screw are out the solenoid section should easily remove from the valve section.

Image

9. The valve operates like so..
When it's closed (or supposed to be):

Image
Image

Here is the open position.. Notice all the carbon built up around the valve. If enough carbon were to build up on this valve and impede its ability to close my engine would be sucking up alot of exhaust all the time.

Image

10. Since the valve section is all mechanical you can feel free to dowse it with your favorite variant of carb cleaner.
**No Pic intended**

11. Once clean use the lubricating oil on the valve shaft so that it slides smooth and easily when you press on the spring.
**No Pic intended**

12. Upon reassembly don't make the mistake I made and face the solenoid the wrong direction.. I sat there for a good 10 minutes wondering why the EGR valve did not fit back onto the intake..

This IS WRONG!! DONT DO THIS! (Refer to the first image for the correct
orientation)

13. Re-install to intake plenum in reverse order and enjoy.

excellent information blackster. thanks...

do you guys know if this procedure is the same for nb8a? And if anyone has done it, was there a significant improvement?

thanks...

Same procedure for all NB's.

I noticed an improvemrnt in my idle because during the cleaning process I discovered that my valve was leaking around the valve stem and needed to be replaced.

The valve is normally closed at idle so if your valve is leaking like mine was or the valve seat is carboned up and it's not sealing properly when shut then the EGR valve may be causing you some idling issues. The best way to tell if your valve is OK is to try to blow through the top hole on the valve. If you can blow through it the valve needs some work done to it. If not, the valve is fine. Press down on the spring and the valve should open moving smoothly up and down. If it doesn't move smoothly, sticks open or wont open at all then giving it a clean should help.

While you are cleaning things in that area you should also clean out the EGR port that runs from the valve through the intake manifold to up near the throttle plate. Mine was almost totally blocked with carbon.

Looks like an electronic external wastegate. It would work the same.
