How hot must the gearbox be for this noise to appear? Have no issues with mine.
As with the NCs, they make a strange whinning noise as they accelerate from rest. Funny enough after 10000 kms, the noise had gone away. Maybe that was due to the tightness of the gearbox or diff ?
Other than that my NC has the same gearbox characteristics as any, ie. 1st to 2nd grind......

Hot as in straight in to the garage from a decent run. However, you'll have to sit at idle with the clutch out to hear it. Try clutch in and out and you will/may pick a small rattling/growling noise clutch out.

Nope, no grind in either of ours. However, it is quite notchy and resists first to second change when stone cold. A deliberate pause in neutral before going into second gear seems to fix it.

I forgot to mention that in stop-start traffic, when the car is still rolling forward, it is difficult to put it into first gear.
Don't care how well you change gear, that's the way the Mazda gearbox is. Some of you swear by Redline oil change, but from experience it made no difference after the first few gear changes!
I've accepted the grind, whine and any future rattles

We had been driving for around 500km at freeway speeds with a little bit of fanging through the twisties along the way in temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees.
My car was idling beside a brick wall and the sound was amplified by the brick wall. I could hear the sound while sitting in the car with the window down, radio off. KK's car was parked out in the open and you could hear the noise easily from 10m away. Playing with the clutch pedal or moving the gearstick slightly would make the noise go away. If you were parked in a quiet place like a garage even a deaf truck driver would be able to hear it easily.

Well, I just drove to the north side of Brisbane and back again - total 60km. Stop start traffic from hell for about 20km on the way out and about 10km on the way back. No problems with any gear selections at any time (apart from the usual when cold for the first 500 metres) - absolutely slick. Oddly enough, it behaves precisely the same as the previous one.
