SE Cooling Issues?

Hi,

Noticed last night that when I got home I could hear a gurgling noise inside the cabin (water boiling sound), and as soon as I turned on the heater it went away. Whilst out driving the car was driving ok but certainly not at it's full potential, almost felt like the leads were a tad wonky. Radiator is full with water too. Car has done 60,000klms for reference. Temp gauge sitting at normal just to the right of middle as per usual.

When I left the heater turned on the car boosted to full potential, making me think that it's got a temp sensor that retards performance when too hot.

Anyone else experienced this?

Can you verify that the fans work OK?

Is the thermostat OK too?

You might also have an air bubble in there somewhere, and when you opened up the heater valve, it may have gone away.

Not sure re the fans/thermostat but it never shows it as overheating on the gauge, mind you it could be a dodgy one like the oil one.

Possibly...I'll try it tonight with the heater off and see what happens.

Good point Drifter, the basics are always the way to go, just ordered the cap and thermostat from our Spare Parts Dept...getting them tomorrow!

Can run for 1 more day with the heater on!

& once you replace all the bits Craig, make sure to run it for a good 1/2 hr/40 mins with the radiator cap OFF & the heater wide open (not sure if NB's have a water tap for the heater or not

).......anyways, that should get rid of any air in the system

i don't know if this is relevant but i had to run with the heater on full at winton last weeend, otherwise the car would overheat. i recently replaced coolant , rad, rad cap, and thermostat too. maybe i need to depressurise the system and run the car for half an hour as suggested.

i will also be removing the aircon and fitting an oil cooler, hopefully this will solve it.

Put in a real gauge so you know what's going on.

they shouldn't cause it fatty, honestly.........try running the engine with the rad cap off for 1/2 hr, it's always been SOP for me when changing, draining or generally fooking around with the cooling system in any car i've had.
