Another big vote for learning to race on worn out tyres rather than good street tyres. It only takes one good brake lockup to totally destroy a fresh set of tyres. I've trashed 3 sets of buggered old tyres on practice and training days without a worry over the last 2 years.
Almost bald tyres work just as good as new ones on a dry track. Cheapness is the main thing to go for but softer tyres are better than ones which were made hard in the first place or have hardened with age.
To get the age look for an oval stamped near the rim around a 4 digit number like 2604. The first 2 digits are the week of manufacture and the second 2 are the year, so 2604 is the middle of 2004.
