Leather Gear Knob

Postby marcusus » Mon Mar 17, 2008 8:51 pm

Anyone have any suggestions for where to look to get a nice leather gear knob? Any good brand suggestions?

Ideally I'd like something OEM in style in black leather with green stitching.

How easy would it be to redo an OEM gear knob like that and how much do you reckon it would cost?

5spd or 6spd? You might be able to get an SE leather knob (6 spd) from one of the guys occasionally wrecking SEs around the place for cheap, stitching's not green, tho.

5 speed, which is probably the biggest problem. I'd rather not have an SE knob because it's got red stitching, which won't quite match with the way the interior is going at the moment. I'd do better just getting a standard OEM leather and retrimming it I think.

How easy is it to retrim a 6 speed to have a 5 speed indented pattern on the top? Or is that actually built into the knob material itself?

What about restitching a nardi shifter?

One of my regular eBay searches is for an RX-8 knob.
They've been going for around $60USD. I guess you can get away with putting a 5speed pattern sticker on top....

They are veeerrry noice to hold by the way if you've never held one. nicely weighted

As in a proper nardi one, or an OEM that's a rebadged nardi?

Looked at the momo site. None of the knobs looked any good to me.

I get the feeling I'll just have to wait it out for an OEM leather knob and just retrim it...

Talk to Andy Wana about RX8 knobs - he bought my voodoo to replace his, and the original looked pretty crook. They really mark up badly on the metal trim on the top of the knob, and it seems that this might be common, hence good ones get snapped up quickly as replacements.

Interesting. Maybe the top bit is made of chromed plastic instead of metal BD?

Completely forgot to check mx5parts
That being said, the original 'style' one is the closest one, and even then doesn't quite look the part.

Will have to keep hunting.

Any word on the indented shift patterns and whether you can just reupholster over them?
