The hawk HP+ may be very good when slightly warm but are still not a friendly 0 degree pad which is something I'd rank pretty high for a daily driver. Plus I would say they have enough bite to overcome cold street tyres with ease.

I still use ferodo advance on the rear of my car, was only $60 if I recall and they've been fine. Still reaches over 200C on the rear of my car during trackdays so they try. Dead quiet and not much dust at all. I'd just see whether those, the bendix advance, EBC greenstuff or oem are more available/cheaper in your area. At the daily level all I'd want is cold bite, low noise and decently low rotor wear. Higher friction/higher temp pad you get the more you lose those characteristics.

Well after todays cruise i got brake fade on the way down

I'd like to know what people would recommend me

The 5 would be mainly dríven on the streets

I'm not sure what brakes i got on mine but they were replaced before I got the car

I changed my mind on the RB74's and have a set of Hawk HPS's on their way in from the US of A.

Brake fade isn't only due to the pads. My logic is if the pedal hits the floor and no brake then your flexing in the lines/boiling the fluid. If your foot is normal position but the car just doesn't pull up hard...your pads are overheated or not bed in.

thats what happening doesn't pull up as fast



JBT well my car got a brake fluid and pads replaced when it did the roadworthy a few days before i got the keys to it which has been just over 2 months ago about 6,000km

clutch fluid? how does that effect braking?

I believe he means it's a good idea to do both at once...seeing as the clutch is just brake fluid. Just natural pairing.

What pads do you have?

i have no idea more than likely some generic brand

i've only had the 5 for just over 2 months and they pads and fluid were replaced for RW a few days before i got the keys


so is the clutch fluid just brake fluid?

what type of fluid do you guys recommend?

I'll be doing my oil change soon so I'll do it along with my oil change

but brake pads they're fairly new so i don't wanna waste them

If your pads have a serial number on the back of them you could try to google the number.

The fluids for the clutch and brakes are the same... (DOT3 according to the owners manual). Although some people get away with/recomend DOT 4.

I have speed bleeders so I just buy cheap brake fluid and replace more often. Does not have to be replaced with every oil change... probably every 6 months is plenty.

For me a 500ml bottle does all the brakes and the clutch, if you dont spill/waste any.

Try not to save left overs for another day, brake fluid doesnt keep very well once opened.

Dont spill it take your time and use a funnel because it strips paint like no tomorow, also bad for you so try to wear gloves.

Well in that case, the fluid should look very clean in the brake master cylinder reservoir.

You aren't very clear about how the brake fade happened. Were you "riding" the brakes down a long descent?

It's a good idea to flush both brake and clutch fluid at least every two years to help prevent hydraulic system (brake and clutch) component failure and brake fade due to contaminated fluid.

DOT 3 for a Hyundai. DOT 4 fluid for MX5 street use. DOT 5.1 for street and the occasional track day. Race fluid (RBF600 or similar) for a serious track car. Double the price for each step up.

Never use DOT 5, only 5.1.

If you don't know what pads and fluid you have your off to a bad start with tuning the brake system. You can hope they're not bedded in well and get better with time but ultimately your likely just going to have to deal with the braking as is if your not going to change the pads. Most of the club drivers are nice, maybe you should steal a ride with someone sometime until you find someone who has the braking you want. Then find out what they use and copy. Personally I have set of HP+ used twice sitting back in their box... which I'll likely either never use again or might use as a street pad depending on how brutal my DS3000's are getting to and from track-days. I got the car to have fun..and if my brakes don't work I don't have fun. Never hurts to have an emergency set of pads either. I'd personally just change them.

Just finished fitting the pads, lubing the calipers and flushing the fluid through the system, oh and i adjusted the hand brake whilst i was there.

The feel good so far 8)
