Never had any issues with standard unleaded. Patchy's been on 16 deg BTDC for just about 10 years. I know of several NA engines which couldn't even run 12 with 98. Each engine is slightly different. Not sure why.
I do however get better milage with 95 & 98 than standard unleaded. My own personal favourite seems to be 95ron Thats what Patchy lives on most of the time.

Me and a couple of mates checked my timing today. It took us a while to locate the notch on the crank pulley. Once we located that we worked out the timing is between 18 to 20 BTDC. I dont think thats right but I wouldnt think the locater can just move....

Did you bridge the TEN and GND terminals in the diagnostics box?
Last time I saw one with that sort of advance, it was caused by incorrect cam timing (inlet cam on a 1.6 out one tooth).

Yeah bridged the terminals.
It runs fine otherwise so I'm not sure...

So did this one, but with a tendency to overheat.

As Stan stated, different cars can handle different advance, but with it hovering around 18-20 on an otherwise stock car is really on the limit, and I would lower it lickety split if I were you.

Funny how I missed this thread and put one under Suspension and brakes instead! At least this one answers most of my questions - going to try higher than 14 degrees now...
NB SE, NA 1.8.

When I had my stock ecu in I just rotated the cas to as far advanced as it would go. Massive difference in low and mid torque, no pinging, I always use 98ron.
Now with the standalone, low and mid torque feel even better, but not sure what the timing is on the stock ecu at those load points.
We turned the CAS a fair bit either way (but not all the way) just to experiment, and we got up to 20degrees BTDC and 6degress ATDC.
I'm sure it goes several degrees more either way.

Ah ok
So is it fine to leave the car like that?
It runs fine. Doesnt ping and doesnt overheat?

Like what? 18-20 BTDC?, I wouldn't if I were you.
Pinging isn't all that audible with the human ear, and especially not from the driver's seat unless it's really bad.
As Stan said, some cars can't even handled 12degrees.

Hmm i'll get a mechanic to look at it then

Does someone in Syd want to organise a dodgy day for this?
I don't have the required hardware or knowledge.
I'll bring the sausages!

Enjoy your free torque and less emissions and better fuel economy.
Hmmm, The timing was usually quite retarded in engines to cut NOX which is why advancing the timing has always been free power but worse emissions.

Hmmm
I spoke to my mechanic and he said as long as the car is running fine and not pinging it should be fine.
I was also told the AFM is not hot wire so it should be fine to use an Oiled Filter....
