I still think it feels like a timing issue....related to the SVT yes, but its not the actuator, or the solenoid. I have already been through all of that. I think now I will have to crack open the valve conver and check the SVT mechanism itself. I had been hoping to avoid that, but there are few options left.

Further update, and probably the last one....
After cleaning the intake yesterday, I felt I got about a 60-70% resolution to my problem. The flat spot was far less....felt more like a slight stumble at 3000rpm, and then a fairly sudden increase in power at 5600 ish rpm. But compared to what it had been, it was a major improvement. On a whim, I disconnected the power last night. I have had previous cars with ecu's that \"learn\". Not sure if the MX5 is in that group, but decided to reset the ecu anyway.
So, reconnect the power this morning, and drive to work....no stumble at 3000, pulled evenly, but still a noticeable improvement at about 55-5600rpm. I am starting to think this is what \"normal\" should feel like. My car has 150k on the clock, and I have had it for the last 30k. Given the amount of carbon blocking the intake, this problem has probably been building since before I had it. I am not confident that I have experienced \"normal\" before, but am thinking this might be it.
