It's 100mm in Melbourne too.
I run my 5 at 105mm to the front crossmember.
Exhaust sits a touch lower but I have never been picked up on that.

what you are suggesting is even if you had no suspension travel provided you have 100mm clearance it would be passable.

That is incorrect.


additional requirements for suspension lowering is that the free travel of the suspension is not reduced by more that a thirdas well as the bumpstop is not reduced more than a third as well.

and with the Koni set up....... considering both I recon is impossible. he copper may have been guessing. But he guessed right.

I Don't really care how they test it. As I said. The copper was probably taking an educated guess. They have the power to defect a car on state roads on under reasonable suspicion. They can even defect anything which has proper engineering.

But all that is beside the point. You were making one suggestion. I was suggesting its different. Or at least a little more complicated than you were suggesting.

I wouldn't go as far as that....but certainly Gods sidecick as far as defecting a modded car goes.

The copper could have been a prick & ruined UA day. But credit goes to UA for not giving him lip & now actually trying to do something about it without getting a defect.

When I was setting up my suspension I seem to remember a rule about the distance between the headlight and the road :?

Guess each state has its own rules, I'll need to try and find the W.A. ones.

Also the W.A. rules say that your suspension can't be \"raked\" BUT the OEM NB MX-5 specs have the car \"raked\" so you have to match the Mazda rake angle to get a permit.

Hope that makes some sense.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Coilovers are illegal in Qld. Umm the MX5 has them standard.

But 'technically speaking' either way my solution wont be adjustable coilovers....... 8)

They will simply have the bottom spring seats set up like coilovers.....

Watch this space for a MX5 pilot project coming to a road near you.....

The car is back :D

The car is good:D

The ride height is smooth 8) and the ride is even better than before.

I have now have the equivalent of fully height and rebound adjustable Koni coilovers.

I'll take pics over the weekend, and stay tuned for a Fulcrum suspension Tech day where they can explore suspension options for the 5 with our motley bunch.

Thanks to Gary and the guys at Fulcrum Yerongpilly for an awesome job on both the R&D side of a totally new and untried suspension solution and the delivery of said solution for our MX5s.

Fulcrum did me a deal because I'm the first to try it.

Now they know how it will be more than I paid, but less than I could have paid for all the R&D side.

Way less than the cost of replacing everything with say Teins, and then having to try and flog off the leftovers at bargain basement forum prices.

The sleeves were $140 for the parts. The rest was labour, fabrication, and wheel alignment.

K, was just interested whether the cost to buy new Koni/Kings + Mod was more or less than the Tein's as this idea was floating around my head when I bought the Tein's.

Might have been, but did you know of the koni fix when you bought the teins?

Anyway - here's what they did:

Obviously the threaded sleeve slides over the shock body. They had to mill in a shoulder on the inside of the sleeve so it would sit tight down over the Koni seating rings. The locking rings screw into place on the sleeve, then they modified the spring seats so they would sit on the locking rings. There was a bit of fabrication involved, but it has transformed the car - the springs and shocks are obviously much more in harmony, and the ride is while firm and sporty, not harsh (as it was). They have set it up so I can go lower if I want to but that it sits about perfect where it is. I'll clean the car before I post up a ride height pic.
