Lightweight flywheel questions (NB)

Sorry for the nube questions:

1 How light can I go for a daily driver?

2 Do I get more milage and fule economy out of it?

3 Will I still be able to cruse down the freeway in 6th doin 110kmp/h with 3000 rpm?

4 Does it make it harder to downshift because the revs drop more quickly? (I cant heal and toe)

5 Looks like a lot of work (beyond my skills) so how much is labour to install one?

Hi Wun,
1. I am running a 4.5 kg Toda flywheel (about 1/2 original weight).
I could possibly go lighter. The first few drives I was stalling it, especially in reverse.
I still have "moments" occasionally :mrgreen:

when I have brain fade when driving off in the morning..

2. Doubt it. I keep anally retentive records of my fuel consumption and the difference in negligible.
If anything, you may use more fuel as the car revs soooo much easier :mrgreen:

3. Yup. Why wouldn't you?

4. Makes downshifting heaps more fun. And you can heel&toe you just have to practice more. You did ok last week.

5. it is a f%&k load of work!! :shock:

Yeh but freddy rides bikes too so anything that you can't get to from the side is too f#*kin hard :mrgreen:

I have the old style Flyin Miata lighter flywheels on our NB8A.

1) Sorry can't remember how light this one is, but it's fine.
2) Nope, in fact you might floor it a bit more :twisted:

3) Hasn't effected highway cruising for me.. can't remember how many RPM in 5th.
4) Nope not really, you notice it a bit more when you have to give it a fraction more gas from the lights.
5)Dunno, I stuck it on while the engine was out of the car.

Lol I helped, trust me that was one long day and not worth doing unless you change the clutch at the same time so you don't have to go in there again for awhile
