DIY Console..

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago I decided to make my own console. I have always liked the Nakamae Carpet console's, but not the $600 price tag.

So I got a friend of mine who has one, to send me a few detailed pictures that I could work from. After studying the pictures for a while, I decided that it didnt look too hard to make up a copy.

Late last week I bought a few supplies, Automotive loop pile carpet, a spare NA console to modify, and a Shelby Cobra shift ring. I have spent a couple nights this week shaping the console, and getting the carpet to the right shape. I still have alot to do, but I though a few people might be interested to see how its coming along.

The car is a mess at the moment, but you get the idea. I still have to relocate the window switch (just down from the shifter), modify the shift boot and ring, and then get the carpet overlocked on the edges. Other than that im quite happy with the way its coming along.

Does it save much weight?

Do you miss the ashtray cup holder etc?

Errr where do the power window switch go to now?

Did you relocate the fuel and boot release leavers?

Does it get hot or is the carpet good enough as insulation?

i have had a similar idea floating around in my head for a while, not using carpet tho.

can't wait to see yours in the flesh!

Hey Ryan, that looks good! I've been thinking about doing that for some time but never got off my ass to do it.. Only problem is having an NB need to move the window switches... I think Obiki has a photo of it somewhere in his huge archives...

Anyone done this to an NB?

Intersting, I just re-carpeted my 929 with a one piece moulded carpet (the factory carpet was in about 4 pieces) and it looked so god with no console and the carpet fitting nicely that I haven't re-fitted the console.

The plan is to to build a nicer more functional cosole finished in a satin black, but after seeing this, I may stock with carpet trim... I thought I was alone in my like of this sorta stuff.

lol me too...

that carpeted console looks the goods... what are you using under the carpet or is it just straight carpet?? i think the bought one has a fiberglass skin underneath???
ive wanted to do something similar for quiet awhile too... i was just going to ditch the electric windows though...
