Just get a thicker mild steel pipe. Most exhausts are made with very thin metal, not much than 1mm thick. A decent 2-3mm thick mild steel system will have enough mass in it prevent it being overly raspy.
Of course, this is dependant on how big your exhaust is also...

The muffler mostly dictates the exhaust note. If you are going just for sound, and are on a tight budget, just change the muffler.
Go to a shop that has LOTS of different internal designs and they can trial fit it, and you can rev the car to hear the note.
Not sure if they still make it, but Lukey (a division of Walker) makes decent price/quality mufflers with various internal designs.

You can buy my xforce cannon exhaust, bolts on factory mounts

Had a great sounding setup on my NB8A. Slightly larger pipe cat back, all mandrel bends, with straight through resonator and Luky Dynomax muffler. More power, less weight, and an awesome sound as it wound up. Just quiet enough to get past Mr Plod at lower revs too!
Had it made up for less than 600 3 years ago at Carnegie Mufflers in Melbourne.
Just talk to Domenic, he loves his exhausts.
