Which way to go, 6X8 or 6.5 inch splits?

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I logged on, but need some advice, I while ago I read a posting of someone who mentioned having 6X8 installed in a NB and couldn't find it.

Over Xmas some low life stole my system whilst I was away on holidays and the car was stored... It's another story... But they slashed the roof and took my JVC el kamelion cd player, mp3 12 stack and cliff design splits... Not happy. Fortunately not the amp sitting under the seat...

So now I am planning my next system and need to know whether MB Quart RVF268's would fit? Has anyone fitted any 6X8's in their front doors??

I have a preference to go down the path of 6X8's so any advice would be appreciated. I had the system from my last car and would happily go back to cliff designs but you really need a sub to have them at thier best as they have such a clean top end and lack meaty mid bass...

A good set of 6\" splits will be better as the market for 6x8 (6x9?) is limited to those who simply want volume over quality. Forget 3 ways with the little tweeters, these do sweet FA. Go the MB Quarts so long as they fit.

The pioneers were the only 8\" rounds I could find at the time, I have to admit I use a crossover with tweeters in the factory location.

I'm sure there are better 8\" round speakers out there.

Obiki - thanks for the thread link - I read that with interest... It's a shame I can't find anything on an 8 inch split... How do they sound?

I'm not an audio expert and don't want panel shaking doof doof, they sound good enough to me, I did also have a pair of 8\" speakers in the parcel shelf but ditched them when I got the brown davis.

IMHO MB Quarts are the best all round speakers out there.

Rather than spending time fabricating a new mount, cutting door panels and basically shoe-horning 8\" drivers in, spend the time on the install of the 6's, with sound deadening the sealing up the door cavity as much as possible. You'll got twice as better sound this way, and the woofer will extend lower and with more omph then an 8\" in a standard door.

There's much more fabrication involved fitting a 6\" speaker into an NB than there is to fit an 8\" speaker (ie, non to fit an 8\"). Both sets of 8\" speakers I have fitted to my car fitted the door cutout perfectly, even the screws lined up with the existing mounting holes in the door.

Yup I agree. I made a thin MDF baffle because the panel on the door wasn't flat and I wanted the speaker to be more air tight.

Dynaudio make a 7\" split and DLS make an 8\" split. Both have excellent reputations for SQ.

I picked up a pair of VDO Dayton 8 inch 3 ways 90W RMS jobbies at Repco - they were clearing stock and I scored these for *cough* dollars

Haven't got to fitting them yet, but for the money they have to be good!

Edit - just had a good look at them and found that they are made by Phillips for VDO. If anyone is interested in these I'd head to your local Repco and see if there are any left. 8 inch car speakers are becoming very hard to find.

ok so what are the best speakers for NA doors? something with a bit of low / mid bass thump, that bolts directly into the holes in the door?

it's strange that all the speakers i've seen fitted to NA's seem to be a little bit too small for the holes and require brackets etc...
