Im also interested in CAI but I dont want to drill holes into the fire wall...
Do you think I will still get noticable performance gains with just a heat shield and a large K&N pod filter???
I kinda wanted one of these

I mad my own and felt the same as you so have just left it drawing air from under the bonnet.
Can't see much advantage in hacking a hole in my lovely little car to draw in hot air from outside.
I have run a temp sensor on the side of a pod filter under the hood of my 5. I have temps in excess of 50c and this is the side opposite to the headers.

Ditto, kinda.
Took temp reading using a laser thermometer after laps at a track day and "cold-side" of pod was just under 40deg celcius. I have a heatshiled protecting just the pod itself, and my extractors are exposed.

I checked temps under my bonnet and of course there is no real difference between both sides of the engine bay, Which is what I expected.
It does get hot when commuting but I checked the area in front of the windshield and It got almost as hot as the engine bay.
The only place to get cool air is from the front of the car

There might be another issue here. My car is pushing hot air out through the cabin vents. The heater flap is fully shut so it seems that the heat is coming from the airbox in front of the windscreen.
There's a rubber sealing strip between the engine bay and the air box. This is meant to stop the air that's flowing through the radiator and over the engine from getting into that airbox. On my 12 year car it's squashed flat and does almost nothing. I'm ordering a new one. If it works then I'm hoping to have cool air there at higher pressure.
