Circuit Club Eastern Creek Twilight 25th Jan

Is anyone else going to Eastern creek on friday with Circuit Club?

I'll be going, first time on the track.

Anybody know what sort of times I should be aiming for with a stock engine and semi slicks?

Its a Circuit Club event, so lots of Hondas and Nissans and breakdowns.

There might even be some spots left if you're lucky, its $235 I think, and you get stacks of track time, instructors and official timing.

I've been to a couple of CC events at wakefield and they're pretty good. I spectated one at EC and they have lots of very nice cars.

Come along, predend its a week later and you're an A1GP driver.

I think Matilda does it in a 1.54.
david from Mania does it a little quicker.
i think anything under 2.10 for an N/A MX5 would be pretty darn good


if its your first go on a race track add another 10-20 secs to it.

first time for any track and youn are tackling EC........you are a braver man than me sasso.

Under 2 mins, wouldn't you need a turbo? The mania race car does.

Oh no its not my fist time on a track...I wouldn't be going to EC if it was. I've been several times to wakefield, best was 1:16 so far but much improvement is to be made.

It is my first time to EC though. I'll have the help of my dad (f3 race engineer) and James Winslow an F3/A1 driver. I just have no idea what the lap record is for a naturally aspirated mx5.


I remember seeing someone else post that they were going but can't remember where.

Even if you haven't entered, come along and support the 5's!

Hey mate,

From the Supersprint round held at Eastern Creek last year.

As you can see, I managed a lowly 2:02 whilst many other 5s were quicker on the day. The fastest for a Class 2B car, normally aspirated under 2 litres, light mods was 1:59 and Mike Hicks was the fastest 5 in that class with a 1:59:13.

Have fun mate, it is a great track. Wish I could be there this evening, but will be stuck in Newcastle. Hope the weather is kind to you also!

Oh yeah forgot to mention 1600cc, I suppose add a second or so to the times.

It better not be wet. I just hope traffic isn't an issue. 20 minute runs, 2 groups, of 25 cars.

I'll aim for as close to 2 mins as I can without hitting a concrete wall.

What an afternoon.

2 cars had to be towed away. An R33 Skyline, and I think an R32 Golf. Poor guys.

What a psycho track! If you're really brave you can take the first coner flat out at 170kph. Just don't try in in the dark after making the rear bar softer like I did. I ran wide onto the dirt then was sliding sideways at 170 for what felt like ages. Thank god I didn't hit the wall on the inside, but now I have 4 big flatspots, great.

Apart from that it was alot of fun! I managed a 2:02.5 with plenty of improvements to be made, mostly finding the bravery to take the corners faster, and refining the lines, apparently all the apex and turn in cones are in the wrong place according to my instructor.

There were lots of very nice and expensive cars. The euro garage was the best with a porsche 911 (I think), Audi R8, Ferrari 360Mod and a baby Aston (I think).

I went along to this too. Great event. How full-on was turn 1 in total darkness!

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Not too sure what times I got - I was more concerned about not punting into a concrete barrier than getting a good time, so never looked at the results. I would think around 2:20 though. I was a nanna out there.

Which instructor did you have Sasso?

Turn 1 was by far the most exciting corner. Ever taken a corner flat out with the speedo off the charts knowing that if you run a bit wide you could end up in hospital?...legally
Every time I was coming down the straight I couldn't help but think, crap not again, what if I die this time? And I sure had a long time to think, the suspense just builds up. Well worth it though.

The dark is so dangerous, next time I'm using HIDs with mega highbeams.

Yeh those concrete walls are daunting. I'm so much more relaxed at wakefield, you can push to the absolute limit and if you breach it chances are you won't even leave the track.

About the instructor. My dad was a race engineer for Piccola Scuderia and BRM Formula3 Teams last year and James Winslow was the driver (from england). He also has some experience in A1. He was actually testing in his F3 when we were arriving. He also works for those driving solutions people so I got him to go passenger, he said he instructed a few people that afternoon.
About the cones, I think the cones are general lines perhaps to make it easier, the lines James taught me were the Formula 3 lines, and funnily enough they were exactly the same as what my dad told me to do, (wonder where james got them from??).
Only thing you have to watch out for with that is that the F3 car is obviously very different to an mx5 so some lines that work for an F3, with twice the power and half the weight, don't work so well with the mx5 because you might lose some corner speed but then can't exactly blast out of the corners. However the lines were actually easier to take and if I had the chance to try them flat out would probably take seconds off my time. (yes he insisted I drive at 80% so he didn't die).

Ran wide on turn 1? :shock:
I suppose being in the dark makes it that much harder though.

Great time for a stock? NA6 especially given it was your first run on the track. I think turn 1 is great for low powered light weight cars like MX5s because it is very difficult to judge how much to brake in a more powerful, faster car. I often find that I can catch a lot of cars that have passed me on the straight by running flat through turn one and leaving braking until very late in turn two.

There's 50 photos of the ferrari at the exact same angle, and one of every other car, but mine's not bad so I bought a 12\"x8\" to go with my ones at wakefield. I really need a front lip, garage vary or R spec.


Nice youtube clip spranga. I don't think I heard you go flat turn one hehe, was that on another run? I don't blame you, I think I did it completely flat from the last corner to turn 2 only once. Yeh my engine is basically stock (not for long).
We'll get used to it i suppose, just like turn 9? at wakefield can easily be taken flat but it takes practice to get the courage to do it, now its flat without hesitation. Mind you thats at 100k rather than 180k.

Yeah first time at EC with the MX in that clip so with dodgey brakes and 14 yo 150,000 km stock shocks a completely flat run through turn one was a little beyond me that time :oops:
