i had the brushed Aluminium one in my car when i first got it.. it wasnt to bad.. i just a got a bit over it after a while.. but it was quite expensive for just a vinyl..

there is one company that actually sells the REALLY thin metal ones.. and they look great, ive seen one in person.. i just cant remember where to get it

and also.. i had the NA one obviously with the ashtray surround and i left a lighter in my ashtray once on a hot day and it blew my ashtray in half ripping the vinyl.. it was a shame as i couldnt replace the vinyl without buying a whole new kit.. so it looked abit odd

I bought it from EBAY for around AUD$150. The kit consist of 24 pieces of real CF coated with somekind of flexible resin. It has 3M double sided backing, it's quite easy to install. The kit itself is pretty good quality, Some of the cut is not perfect but for what it is I think its pretty good value for money.

Any pics of the Vent rings?

nope, I put on the satin metal vent rings. The CF ones looks a bit silly, just cover the top bit.

I think Amanda had the trim kit too, but I also seem to recall something about her selling the '5

I was looking at these kits when I first got my '5. At the time they only sold them from Germany or something like that, so I didn't bother and went with another option.

If you're feeling DIYish you could take all the bits out and spray them yourself like I've done (my other option)

I had a set of the CF kit on my previous 5 and it looked really good and went on easily, if you take a bit of care and prepare the surface properly.

When I got my SP, I thought I would get another set in brushed metal finish, so I got a set from the USA, and it looked terrible and very plasticky.

If you stick with the patterned kits, like CF or woodgrain, they look great, but the plain ones like the brushed metal, just don't look right.
The colour is greenish and it looks cheap and nasty.

Was this done with spray pack or with a gun and paint for plastics? What \"colour\" was used- there are many silvers of course. Removing of plastic bits can sometimes be tricky- any comments on getting them off. I would also be interested in how the parts were held for painting. Finally is the different colour easy to live with or - \" I should have left it alone\" Thanks

Spray paint. No primer either (at least when those photos were taken). Basically I took the trim apart, washed it, and started spraying. Didn't sand, didn't prime.

What "colour" was used- there are many silvers of course.

Some generic hubcap silver. Didn't pick out the colour specifically. I actually bought the can to spray paint my NB8A centre caps because they were doing the usual fade to yellow business. I figured since I had an entire can, I'd give the trim a crack. Worse come to worse, I'd go to Mania and pick up a new one, which I obviously haven't needed to do
I bought the can from Super Cheap or Auto Barn or something like that. It's called Motospray and is their Acrylic Wheel Silver colour. I can take a picture if you really want

Removing of plastic bits can sometimes be tricky- any comments on getting them off.

The hardest ones to get off are the rings for the vents. That requires removal of the entire vent, then after you've done that, you need to then pry the rings off the vents themselves, which is surprisingly difficult. Damn you Mazda for your good build quality!! I can explain how it's done if you want.

I would also be interested in how the parts were held for painting.

Laid the parts down on newspaper and just did light coats. Made sure everything that would show was sprayed, and that was it.

I think it looks great. It's pretty much what I wanted without having to actually buy OEM silver trim bits. It's not mega reflective or bright and really sets off the interior well.

Marcusus-Thanks for the detailed and quick reply- that really pretty much covers it - you took the most straightforward way of doing it and it turned out very well. Having done it yourself you have got a good result for very little expenditue.

Indeed. Total cost was $10.95 for the can of spray paint, about a day's worth of work (but with lots of breaks and doing other stuff to let paint dry) and a beer (or 6) afterwards.
