How I installed larger speakers into the MX5

Postby wun911 » Sat Jan 12, 2008 7:24 pm

I wanted better sounds, I wanted to hear music instead of traffic and road noize especially when I have the top down.

Fist you will need to remove the door trim as explained here:

The stock MX5 speaker is the smaller speaker and its mounted into a plastic bracket that is has screws placed 20 cm apart. The pioneer speakers on the right are 20 cm or 8\" round speakers. So its a perfect fit! You wont have to cut a lager hole in the door of your MX5! These speakers are kinda like mid range mini subs and overall Im quite happy with them about 3 times louder than stock! (weigh 3 x times more too)

With the pioneer speakers I think the fist two digits tell you the size (in cm) of the speaker (in cm)

You will need some speaker rings mine were cut out of MDF so to help water proof them I just spray painted them black.

I used some pellet wrap to seal the MDF to the speaker also helps ensure the MDF is nice and dry. The MX5 only has 4 screw holes, whereas the 8\" speakers have 6 screw holes. Rather than drilling holes in my car I drilled holes into the speaker. (In the first pic you can see the extra 2 holes I drilled into the edge of the speaker)

Wire it up and screw the speaker into the door. (not pictured but I tucked the excess wire up to make sure it wire doesnt rattle around in the door.

Put the door trim back on dont forget to wire up the 1\" stock tweeter and your done.

If you need more info and want to know what other large speakers fit into the MX5 look at this:

Looks like you've done a pretty good job there!

I wanted to have a bit of sound behind the ears too so I made a couple of pods up and mounted a set of Kenwoods on the parcel shelf.

Im tempted to recycle the old speakers and mount them on the back aswell. But at the moment its already quite loud and im quite happy.
