Tailshaft compatability

Postby pcmx5 » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:15 am

Does anyone know if NA6 and NA8 tailshafts are the same?

I know that an NA8 shaft will work with the later 6 speed with no modification(in my car), so assume that all 1.8's must be interchangeable.

I am interested in getting a shaft made up by the guy that did PhilM's.(NA6,I think).

The guy has the maesurements for Phils there and if an NA6/8 are the same it will save me having to send my shaft up to him for measuring.

I think it is great idea using Holden replaceable uni's and at $450 it is certainly a cheaper and better option. I have always had a very slight vibration as discussed in PhilM's post.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Maybe a possibility of a group buy?

Hi Peter,

When I upgraded my 1.6l Diff to a 1.8l Torsen diff I had to replace tailshaft with a 1.8l one. I think they are different lengths, as well as some other subtle, but important differences.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jeff,

I thought that may be the case,so may have to send it up there.

Ever since I bought the car it has had a slight vibration, enough to make the passenger seat vibrate when unoccupied, but not disconcerting, so think I will try this new shaft.

By the way I have a solution to your wheel dilemna;i have a set of new Chapparrals 15x7 38 ml offset charcoal with polished rims in my shed. They are the same design as currently on PCMX5, much cheaper option, you won't have to swap tyres!!!!

Cheers,

Peter

Yeah definately different lengths. The spacing in the bolts where it connects to the diff is different too.

I will give Gibsons a ring on Tuesday to see if they have the NA8 sizes - I will let you know.

Peter, I had a mob up here (Driveline Services) make up a tailshaft for my old 1600 when we were competing with it. They added grease nipples and changeable unis. as well as making it much stronger. We did find that hard launches could break those factory shafts. After I threw the car at the Tasmania scenery, they simply replaced the unis which saved me a few hundred dollars too. BTW back 8 years ago, I was paying $300 for the tailshaft.

Thanks Phil,

I asked and they didn't have NA8A specs, perhaps someone local would allow theirs to be measured, it would save me freighting ($40) mine up.

I reckon there is a real market for these and Gibsons sound great to deal with, the guy there(Chris?) was very interested and keen,

Thanks for your feedback Ted, I reckon $460 today is fine and am Pleased you thought it worked well.

What is interesting is that Chris said that many he had done were the same, some sort of groove worn into the Uni that caused them to bind and shudder, he thought caused by the angle of the shaft to the PF.

Peter.
