Are we allowed to paint the number plate on the car?

The black MX5 in this thread caught my eye...

It looks like he painted his number plate onto the car :?:

My number plate bracket has often scratched the front of the car and removing itt also makes the car look better.

Are we alowed to do this in Australia??

some people from the forum have used stickers before, looks alright but I'm sure if they really wanted to they could book you for it

I'm pretty sure thats illegal

you can get number plate bracket which DOESN'T have bolts sticking into your bumper from MX5 Plus

I got one but now it shows the dints and marks the factory bracket bolts made to the car
Mainly cause i have a slimline plate up front

No, not allowed.
The paint used on license plates are reflective in order to show up better at night and on cameras.

I must say that I like the sticker rego look... very british (suits the Mex to a tee)... but always worried about the plod...

What does it look like on your car Curly? have any pics?

I almost did this on our car about 8 years ago but we had a few members get stung by plod all in the same month so I decided not to.

To be legal and meet ADRs the car must have a the licence plate as provided by the state transport body on the front of the vehicle, parallel with the front \"axels\" and can't be obscured by any part of the vehicle.

The plate itself can't be \"modified\" at all.

One trick is to get a licence plate frame thingo and colour code that so the size of the plate looks a little smaller.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

To be honest, it doesn't look as good as some others that I've seen. I'm not sure who's done them, but they're a replica of what a real plate looks like, whereas mine is just a generic font on a reflective background.

I always carry the original front plate in the car, so if I'm stopped I can show that, as well as offer to put it on if required. My prepared excuse is that the plate blocks cooling air from the radiator and causes the car to overheat.

i had a really good slimlinesticker made for my first 5- same size as standard as the real slim line ones- i even scanned the original plate and made the sticker from that- so it was identical- got fined for it within a month from memory. was about $50 in 1993....I'm sure its a hell of alot more now- my advice is, dont do it unless you are prepared for a fine- they probably wont see it unless you get pulled up, but all you need is to get pulled up for RBT and for them to spot it, and they will hit you with it.
Then - '92 White NA6- '89 Red NA6- '96 BRG LE NA8- '95 Laguna '91 Italia No:42 NA6
Now - Looking for a nice NA

Not to sure about the fee but i do know its three points :shock:

I got questioned about my number plate sticker on the Fish and chip run between christmas and New year in 2005 at a RBT.

I changed it a week later and have now got a new slimline plate with the MX5 Plus bracket and a Zoom Zoom number plat surround.

Sticker still looks better but atleast its 100% legal now 8)

:shock: I didnt know it was a points offence now! Back then it was only a monetary penalty. :shock:

I tried that line when i got pulled over one time with no plate on. Police don't buy it at all.
