Hi There,
I was wondering whether or not remote start is legal?

I was speaking to one of the sales guy at Autobarn the other day regarding car alarms etc and he asked whether or not I wanted remote start fitted. I asked him if its legal to have it installed

He answered No its not legal but if its done properly with it cutting off when its in gear its all good

So my question is Remote Start Legal?

I find the key works well for remote starting of the engine. Much better than having to turn the old crank handle.

Crank handles are cool. My Morris minor still had that. And the chicks loved it.

As mentioned before, remote starts are great in cold continents/areas to have the car warmed up etc. It's also great for freaking people out who walk next to your car

But it's probably only really feasible in an auto. I wouldn't put an auto start on a manual car because I nearly always leave it in gear. Don't want it bunny hopping into something.

It shouldn't work when its in gear
And if it does work in gear its illegal according to the installer i spoke to yesterday

Well i'd be a while till i get an alarm in Spent all of my holiday pay on the car

We know that, but it actually happened to some bloke on this forum - caved in the front of his MX-5 as I recall and was lucky not to have injured someone.

It did happen to someone on this forum. I bought his car about a month after it as it was immaculate appart from the mark.

It didn't cave in the front of the car, mearly two superficial mark which polished out (I have before and after pics) The guy just didnt know how to polish properly. The plastic wasn't even damaged at all The bumper wasnt damaged as they are designed to take low impact hits without damage as per US regs (i think its something like below 8km/h). The knock did slightly crumple the aluminium bonnet, you could see the alignment was slightly off (no worse than any other mx5 I saw) but it didnt crack the paint and straightened out with out a worry. If anyone can now see any damage then i'ld be amazed.

Anyway. It can be a bit of fun to have, but unless its pretty cheap to get its not worth having in my opionion. I barely use it enough to warrent having it. People love it though and I think that if you only use it when planned it is a safe feature. Ie: never use it when someone else has been in the car and when you are unsure as to weather or not it is in gear. And in reality whats wrong with using a key to start your car?

It isn't damgerous when you plan using it and use a bit of common sense.

i'm looking at putting this gsm thing in which sents me a txt message letting me know when the car alarm went off etc

I can even sent a txt back to the car to unlock my doors just incase i locked my keys inside

“WARNING:- ALARM PRE-INTRUDED”
“WARNING:- ALARM ACTIVATED”
“WARNING:- VEHICLE BATTERY LOW” (Not applicable on 24 volt vehicles)

The Series 2 model also has 2 text controlled pager outputs;
1. Pulse output - eg: To unlock the vehicle door(s) if your keys are inside
2. Continuous output - eg: To operate any device such as a relay - speak to your Mongoose dealer on various uses

You're absolutely correct....but I'm glad it wasn't mine......luckily it didn't cost anything to fix the BMW it hit The awful truth is in post #10. The before and after pics tell a story.

with viper they can do it cheaper because its already built inside the alarm

but viper is not made to Australian Standards

mongoose doesn't have it built in to the alarm but it is made to Australian Standards

$500 for Remote start with a mongoose - I say NO!!

As for the Vehicle to Mobile Text Pager I was on about a few posts back well its $1,200 - No thanks

That SMS number thing isn't a bad idea. Of course you wouldn't want someone to find out the number of the car though.

It'd probably be fine for deterring opportunistic criminals, but for those that are really keen to pinch your car, there's ways to get the phone number and just do the 'hey presto' on it.

but for $1200 i'll rather spend it on other things

Vipers got a 2 Way Car Alarm which doesn't look too bad but once again its not black wiring so its no good to me

I'm glad to say it looks exactly like the before picture now, except even better as the car was in desperate (by my standards) need of a polish or two.

This Pic shows the lack of bumper damage, the main mark was right below the indicator. But this is before re aligning everything (not that it was that bad, i'm just fussy). This pic shows the alignment (previously sat a few mm high) I probebly wouldn't of been able to afford to buy the car if it didn't have the damage as the seller was willing to drop his price due to it. Then it cost nothing to fix so.... (click to enlarge pics)
