Must say I'm amazed at the brand 'snobbery' the battery question brings up here. So long as it a. fits, b. supplies a reliable current and c. doesn't vent gas or acid to the boot, it will do the job.

Yeah, that's a pretty fair point. I just haven't found the Supercharge Calciums anywhere. I think that if Battery world don't return my call as promised, I'll look a bit harder...

adding to my other 2cents: I have no idea about the Cold Cranking Amps of the Supercharge/Gold-whatever, but the others have hit the nail right on the head as to the reason why I (as I'm sure others) bought the Odyssey.

So I'm comparing the Cold Cranking Amps between the batteries

MX5 Mania has the Odyssey Extreme 680 so I'm assuming thats the one for the MX5

Odyssey 680 - 220
Pulse PHB400 - 198
SuperCharge Gold MF40B20DF - 380 @ -18 degrees

Can someone explain what Cold Cranking Amp means? I'm not too sure what it really means
All I know is the higher the better am I right?

Its a measure of the battery's grunt basically - its ability to deliver current under extreme conditions (cold - as it says -18 degrees C) 200 is plenty to crank an MX5 over, but wouldn't cut it for a big block Chev for example. So yes, 380 is 'better' than 220 or 198, but that is fairly academic as they will all do the job adequately. What is more important is life expectancy vs cost - and that is where the Supercharge wins - guaranteed three years for around $100 can't be beaten unless you can source the others very cheaply and they last longer... which is debatable.

Had my Panasonic replaced 2 & a half years ago (oops, quick charged it with a normal battery charger) with a Delkor 22NF-330D calcium single vent battery. Still in use today & had no problems what so ever (though I should actually take it out & check the condition glass peep hole thing), as far as I'm concerned it's absolutely fine. Only costed me $135 with 2 year warranty from Independant Battery Distributors.

Whats the go with calcium batteries anyway?? Is it that they have healthier bones & teethe?

The 'oily' stuff on top is most likely electrolyte fluid from the battery. Once a battery starts to break down this can happen, and it can also happen if the battery is being overcharged by a faulty alternator - this will cause the fluid to bubble inside and force fluid out the top. Put a volt meter across the terminals and check the charging voltage with the engine running - should be 13.5v, but anything from 12.5 to 14 is ok - if you are seeing over 14 you should make an appointment with an auto electrician...

BTW electrolyte is also highly corrosive, (not real good for your skin or clothing either) so check under and around the battery in your boot for signs of rust. If the battery is shagged change it asap to avoid this.

Tien, I bought mine from the Autobarn at Slacks Creek, so I am assuming other Autobarns stock them. I guess the closest to you would be the one at Grand Plaza, but Slacks Creek would be worth a drive as it's probably the biggest in Brisbane.

I have no idea as what is with the go with calcium batteries. If the CCA of the Supercharge Gold is an indication, it must produce quicker and stronger juice on startup compared to other types, so yes, stronger teef

Another point to consider is that the pulse battery I have can be depleted by 80% and still start my car. I think the odessey should be the same but not sure about the supercharge. I basically bought the pulse bacause it is designed for small turbos, it mounts anywhere, and eventually I would like to do my stereo and it can cope with that sort of drain and still get me started. Think mine cost $180 from memory. Good value if you ask me.

o dear im in trouble now

bought the Supercharge MF40B20F got out to the car and found out it was a little smaller in width

brought it back in and got someone out to have a quick look and they pointed to the MF43

changed over to the MF43 got it out to the car put it in fits fine

Got home to fit it properly and the floor that covers the battery now sits up higher cause the battery is higher than the Panasonic one that was previously there

the MF40B20F is taller than the MF43 which is also taller than the Panasonic I had in the boot previousy

Now looking at the Supercharge Batteries list the MF43 is the shortest that would fit in the boot

How did you guys go with fitting your Supercharge in? also which one did you get?

Accidently the white plastic thing that is rivited to the board which sits on the battery clamp came off the rivets
which solved my problem
