My friend had a 2002 Passat with exactly the same problem which took VW at Orange two weeks and $2000 odd dollars of his money trying to find the problem.
In the end they found out that the air intake was getting clogged and not allowing enough air in to the engine. They had to spray some sort of spray into the intake and were reccommended to do it every year.
Hope you fix it soon.

OK so my pump is for a B6 after all. Presumably the Tank assembly for the pump might be different to the NB8B's but maybe not. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
If the tank assembly is different what about the pump itself?
cheers

I've had it at the work shop for 3 days in total, and they recon they have tried all these test and can't locate the problem.
I am frustrated and angry that my car keeps letting me down and no one at work can pick what's wrong! (speculate)
You guys on the forum seem able to diagnose what's going on and give me things to try to work it out............
Thanks for the offer Stefan, but I do not have internet access and have only just read the forum.......
I will keep plodding along and see when the bugger totally packs it up. My concern is it packs up in peak hour traffic with a semi up my ar$e or even over the Xmas break when no one is available to fix the darn thing!
My money is still on a dodgy coil, or the CAS.
Have they tried testing it when it's actually broken down or are they only able to test it when it works fine? The intermittent problems are the worst ones.

It has happened on my way home from work, 3 times and all 3 times really hot days.
By the next morning when I drop it off at work's service centre it's ok.... not playing up.....sigh!
