Anyone tried programing the spare key?

Postby wun911 » Thu Dec 13, 2007 4:56 pm

I followed this link from miata net:

http://www.msprotege.com/forum/archive/ ... 71178.html

I have tried about 10 times to program my my spare key but to no avail. :frown:

Can anyone confirm that this method works :?:

(My key is for an MX5 NB 2001)

As a side note has anyone tried programing their keyless entry remote aswell?

programming remote should be easier than reprogramming key, have you refered to your alarm manual, it had instructions

if not I have a copy for an NB8A

I've reprogrammed one of my keyless remote keys after it stopped working in the Boag's carpark no less (must have thought it had died and gone to heaven ).

I have the relevant instructions from the workshop manual to do this and can PM them if you need.

I think Wun's referring to the factory remote entry system on the NB8B. Different thing to any dealer fit or aftermarket alarm system.

reprogramming key? because I'm sure it's very different to just reprogramming a remote

as was I to the factory NB8A system

There was no factory remote entry system fitted to the (Australian delivered) NB8A. Both the NB8A and NB8B used the same immobiliser key, but only the NB8B has the factory fitted (fitted in Japan on the production line) remote central door locking/unlocking and boot unlocking.

It was possible to have the local dealers fit remote unlocking systems to the earlier models as part of the pre-delivery, but this would be a mixed bag and would have depended on what suppliers/installers were located within the dealer's area - a bit like getting window tinting fitted by the "dealer".

Ok sorry about all the confusion...

Basically I have two keys that work fine and one new key

I wanted to code a new key to give to my girl friend so... I went to mazda purchased a blank key, and got it cut.

The new key turns the ignition but 1 sec later the engin will cut off...

Basically I want to code this third key... If you have instructions on how to do so plz pm me...

No worries Wun, I knew exactly what you meant 8)

Unfortunately I only have the instructions from the workshop manual for reprogramming the remote (the device top right in your photo). A convoluted sequence of opening and closing doors, depressing the brake pedal, turning the key in the ignition barrel, pushing the correct buttons on the remote, but most importantly holding your tongue the right way.

Correct for the Australian delivered NB8A (yours) and NB8B (Wun's).

Insurgence wrote:AFAIK the remote is separate to the key, and doesnt control the immobiliser, it controls the central locking

Correct for the Australian delivered NB8B only - not the NB8A. This was fitted by Mazda on the production line as the car was being built.

/ alarm.

Incorrect - neither the NB8A or NB8B have a factory alarm. The NB8B remote simply locks and unlocks the doors and opens the boot.

Insurgence wrote:Reprogramming the remote = instructions in the alarm manual

Incorrect - there is no factory alarm (see above), however the instructions for reprogramming the NB8B factory remote are in the Mazda Workshop manual (and on Miatanet as Wun discovered).

if it isn't working then take it back to Mazda for giving you a dud, I can't imagine that they are cheap keys either

They should have checked the code on your current key before giving you the spare, I think there was a small metal tag with a serial number on it for the chip code that should have come with the car
