Roll Bar Air Bag - Shotgun this patent!!!

Postby Jimmy » Mon Nov 26, 2007 7:50 pm

I was in the prosess of padding my rollbar in preparation for Tassy when i suddenly struck what i think is a really good idea, Roll bar Airbags!!! I was cable tying additional head padding behind the seats when i thought \"hey why dont i blow this up like a balloon and see what happens\". So i did. It held the air and i cable tied the other end off. So far it has maintained all air! Has this been done before? I can see this turning into a viable product in the future. It could simply be a product which is velcroed around the rollbar with air or that jelly stuff they have in keyboard hand pads around the head area of the bar. Being an Industrial Designer i am very intrigued with this idea. It would be perfect for track days and also driving round town.

i would like to see a slowmo crash test of both the front and rear air bags hitting the drivers/passengers heads at the same time... but how knows might work.

if your thinking about explosive airbags and not static air bags that is... i would more look into the uprights sticking up from the seatbelt towers and also a bag seperating the two passengers...

the amount of weight gained from all this would be pretty ugly.. but if your talking a road car and safety then sure why not..

only thing is the air bags need to be fully deployed before the victims melon lands on it other wise your copping too much of a blow

i kinda want talking about exploding air bags, mainly due to the obvious risks (death!!!). I was more going along the lines of a cusion of air much like what i have created. Its already inflated and would offer that little bit more protection. The idea is very unlikely to go anywhere but still, i think there is room for development.
