Excessive rattling so I think something's loose in there.
Wanting to take it apart to check...

Thanks

A little more information may assist you in getting a reply ie: the year of your car :!:

You'll probably need to twist the base around to expose the screws and then just unscrew and remove. As Andrew says: more info might help. :) If you've got power mirrors you'll need to disconnect it.

One thing to watch - if it's an NA6 you'll probably break it if you try doing anything with it. The bolt holding the mirror to the base is usually only held together by rust. :)

sorry it's an NA6 :)

ok so I don't need to remove door trim to access it from behind then? Any tips on how to twist the base without breaking it?

thank you

The base itself should twist without breaking (although it might be a bit stuff). The bit that normally breaks is the small ball joint bit where the mirror is fixed to the base. You could soak it with WD40 or similar and cross your fingers, but basically if it's rusted through ... :(
