RYCO Oil Filters

Does anyone here uses Ryco filters? They are well made and I have used them in the past without any issues whatsoever.

I'm planning an oil change now and thought I'd buy them rather than the imported Mazda or K&N. If there's no reason why the local ones wouldn't be good, why buy anything else and support Aust companies.

The Mazda ones have been tested and found to be a great quality.

They're not much more expensive than a supercrap one and you can get 15% off the RRP if you're an MX-5 club of W.A. member.

The difference in quality and parts is the filtering media and that some have an anti drain-back valve.
I know Mazda OEM, Valvoline and PureOne have them, not sure bout Ryco.

Did you know that there are 2 different sizes? The Mazda OEM is smaller, but you can interchange them with the ones for a late 90's Honda Integra, which is approx 40% bigger. Go to your local auto-parts store, look it up in their reference books and compare them physically.

I've always used the bigger ones cause I figure the larger the filtering media size, the more oil can flow through at any given time.

Yes, Ryco has anti-drain back valve. Okibi, not sure what you mean by \"Mazda's been tested\", I'm sure Ryco would have also tested their products. I will draw a line at Ryco as they are not cheap supercrap ones.

We don't really know if the cheap ones are bad anyway as we don't use them, so it's a bit unfair to rate them that way........

Just wanting to know how much the local parts are being supported by us.

The Mazda ones you buy from your friendly Mazda spare parts dude aren't the same as the ones that come with your shiney new MX5. I think you will find they are a \"Mazda Approved Part\" or similar. My dealer used to sell the proper Mazda Japan filter as well as the cheap Mazda Aus supplied one. The ridgy didge Jap one was about double the price of the Mazda Aus one.

I'd be willing to wager that depending on the exact filter part number, the Mazda ones and the Ryco ones are made in the same factory, to remarkably similar quality standards. Ryco is a big company, and like ACL they make many parts for the big manufacturers and put the Mazda/Ford/Toyota brand on it as it rolls down the production line.

Who do you think makes oil filters for Ford/Holden/Toyota/Mitsubishi in this country?

I know that Ryco and Cooper filters are actually made by the same company, but they retail for different prices and are made in different locations.

I use Ryco 'cause they are easier to buy. If my Mazda dealer was as close and as easy to park at, I would consider using theirs. From what I recall there is no real difference in the price.

Well, I've gone and bought one from the friendly Mazda dealer to compare with the Ryco. This one has a Ford/Mazda logo on the box that said \"Made in Gt Britain\"

This filter on the surface does not appear to be any better made compared to the Ryco, both basically the same size. It will be inetresting to compare these to the Jap ones. I guess if they all perform the same function, their appearance should not matter.

I have always used Ryco oil filters and have never had a problem.

Most local mechanics use them. Unless they have to use Genuine due to warranty.

Most of the genuine filters are made by AC Delco

THe honda ryco filter you speak of would be a Z79A which fits many or most hondas. They are the same one listed for alot of fords and mazdas including the mx5. The later model cars however use a smaller version for clearance on the manifold brace thingo. I think from memory that one is a Z411 but don't quote me thats a bit of a stab.

Alot of the ryco filters are made in israel but they do come from a few other places like south africa and new zealand.

As far as the aftermarket filters go, as far as I am aware the ryco is probably one of the most highly regarded. AFAIK all of them should have anti drainback valves.

And as with the anti drain-back valve, it seems that it is more likely than not that all quality filters have them regardless of the part number.

I've had trouble with Ryco filters on mine. They had a broad flat sealing washer that didn't always seal well. You have to tighten them up pretty hard and then with a fully round body they're a bugger to get off.

The Mazda ones that I bought ($42 for 6 from Max Kirwan) have an o-ring seal that works well - easy on and easy off.

No difference in HLA noise between them.
