Could your sump guard be causing an air flow problem?

My car was a close to stock 1600. It was used primarily on tarmac, but my stupidity for lairiness meant it saw the occasional bit of dirt. It just never landed well, and the short wheelbase was a pain. Lack of travel too but I didn't have a mega dollar suspension setup. Mind you, fast forward 10 years and things have come a long way at the cheap end of the market.

My old car became a dirt car in Tassie (it was red last time I heard). I did hear that it was sold to Mark Taylor rally school, but was sent back to Mark Thompson in Tassie soon after.

On a circuit car that I know, there was a lot to be gained in cooling by ensuring the hot air got out. I did have problems with sump guards (mainly lack of ground clearance) but it may pay to check that it pulls air out from behind the radiator.

You could set up a water spray unit to the radiator. just like an intercooler spray unit but you put it on your radiator. A few of the QLD rally cars (non mx5) in the pocket rocket series use that to aid cooling. Also like mentioned get a higher pressure radiator cap. Our arc corolla uses a 6.0 bar radiator cap and no overflow. You could also look at getting water injection for the engine though this is usually left for turbo cars and getit rong you run the high risk of bending rods ect... other then that get in their and cut some holes in the front bar and make sure all the air comming through the front bar is ducted through the radiator and that none of it goes around it.

You need a bigger radiator. Though I agree the PWR ones are overpriced, it certainly fixed any overheating I had in my race car.

Koyo Radiators

Postby clubman1 » Tue Nov 27, 2007 5:13 pm

Hi Guys,

I saw these Koyo alloy radiators the other day on eBay for MX5's. I could not believe the price.

Check it out ebay Item number: 320188016283 for NA6/NA8 USD $89.89

I have been in contact ...$120US to get it to Oz.

I have no idea how the Koyo compares with PWR units. Allegedly genuine japanese production.

That's what I fitted to my car, cost me $350 from a local dealer :(
Perfect fit and had no issues with it. The PWR radiators and all alloy and I think larger capacity.

maybe you should lok at getting some vents punched in the bonnet to aid the airflow out of the engine bay...the turbo guys have had good results with this mod. i would also look at doing the coolant reroute to even up the temps in the engine accross all cylinders...
