Malibu Paint...

Hey Guys..

just about to have those Side Skirts resprayed.. just need to find a place around Sydney's Western Suburbs that can mix the paint for me.. i know the code (HZ) but on the touch up paint i have it it doesnt have a mix # does this mean i will have to get someone to custom mix this?? sorry i dont know much about paints..

I think you're right JBT.
I remember Bob Hall talking about it one day saying that the factory hated to do the yellow Malibu colour as the bodies first had to be painted white, then they had to get them off the production line and manually re-insert them into the paint line to get the yellow put on top of the white the next day.

Yes, Malbu Gold is one of the more difficult paints to match. Having said that Oven Baked Enamel aka the MX-5 factory has always done a great job of matching my paint. So it can be done, might just take a bit more effort.

It's a total pain.

JBT is right, the yellow is just misted over the white. What you are seeing is white through transparent yellow. It's a very bright colour.

Spray painters (even very high end one's) can match the yellow very nicely, but if you get the car under a flouro light, you will see where the original paint and the new paint is, as the flouro really draws out the white in the paint.

While Tweety was in the shop getting the front end fixed I asked Dick to patch up a couple of door dings and then one thing lead to another and in the end it made more sense to re-spray the whole car as I was concerned that she would end up patchy.

Ajay, Have a chat with the spray painter and see what they suggest. If you are just painting skirts this might not be as easy to notice as say one of the larger panels?

Save yourself the trouble Ajay - grab a can of good ole Sunlight Silver instead! Although you'd have to get rid of all those yellow bits under the bonnet, but at least the paint would match the bling bits!

honestly Ajay........with Jules car in any form of light OTHER than flouro, you wouldn't pick it at all, his looks the ducks guts, last week was the first time i'd seen it under full flouro light & you could see it straight away, but only because the light drew the base coat (white) out, you can even see where the misted yellow was a bit light on with the factory paint, it was weird...........just colour match it with the solid colour, being skirts, you won't even notice it mate

When I did mine I just painted over the black. Not a good idea as it took a lot of paint and has a greenish tinge. Just finished my rear deck cover using primer filler (a light tan) and it came up a treat. Colour is HZ and I used a small aerosol pressure pack from Bunnings. If you use this you need to thin the paint out a bit more than recommended...an easy diy job though..
