SPONSORSHIP??? ...motorsport insurance..!
does anyone have any motorsport insurance?
how do yous get around it?
...i went into a motorkhana and ranked 1st outright and now everyone is urging me to keep going and do a hillclimb next weekend... but im very worried about writing off my car and the finance company eating my head whole...
any thoughts..?

when i drive my car on the track my \"insurance\" is that i know the other guys on the track, i trust them, and i know they are good drivers. i also know that they are in the same boat as me if anything was to happen, so they are unlikely to do anything too stupid. i can't say the same for when i drive my car on the road and put myself at the mercy of all the idiots out there
i think if you are going to do motorsport, be careful about who you choose to do it with. before i got involved, i went along to an mx5 vic club motorsport day and just observed. it became apparent that they were a good bunch of people who look out for each other, they were not cowboys. i'm sure the nsw mx5 club is the same.

thanks guys!
you see the problem i have is that as much as i may trust the people i choose to drive with, or as much as i have the attitude that i want to drive home, sh*t happens sometimes... and it would likely happen to me... after which the insurance company wouldnt cover me, and the finance company (car is under finance) would want me to pay for the loan instantly as there is no longer any security...
but i dont want to wait till the car is paid off before continuing to race!

I believe (happy to be proved wrong) that you cannot get insurance for damage that ocurrs on the track, even if you are doing driver training. There is insurance that is available is to cover your trailer, transporter and equipment. I believe that this insurance will cover your car up to the point it is on the track, so while in storage and/or transit to and from the venue.
Hopefully others with more knowledge in this area will also respond, but by all means contact a insurance company.
Let us know how you go as I'm sure other will be insterested to here the results.

Shannon's (and probably others) covers for damage during \"driver training\", but their definition is fairly specific and actually getting a claim paid is another matter.
As far as things like hill climbs, motorkhanas and the like: you're unlikely to write the car off. You might hit a wall (:oops:) or something - as you say, sh*t happens, but at least the MX5 parts are plentiful.
On the other hand, if I was still paying the car off I'd probably be staying clear of anything like that. Even if you don't write the car off you'd probably rather pay an extra $1000 off the car than on a repair bill.

im not that game... ill do motorkhanas but anything else is a big risk...
im competing in the hill climb at ringwood this weekend but ill be racing in a old race prep'd honda prelude, kindly being lent to me... im super appreciative but eww front wheel drive! so at least im not risking my car but im not overly excited about it, i wana drive a 5!!!
so my latest idea is to import a $5000 race/rally mx5 NA8 dedicated to racing...
but funding is a slight problem...

Sponsorship is very difficult to get for any club level motorsport. Unfortuneately there is not much exposure so potential sponsors don't get much if any return for their investment. It is also difficult if you do not have a proven driving record and/or car in my experience.
Most of the people I know in club level motorsport are self sponsored or sponsored in the form of discounted rates by the companies who prepare their car.
Most of the potential sponsors are swallowed up by V8 supercars and the support categories that run with them as they are the only categories that get any real TV/news coverage.
Your best bet if you want to approach potential sponsors is to be well presented and sell off real estate on your car, ie bonnet, doors, bootlid etc. Have pictures of the car and the areas available to be sign written, take along a copy of your race calendar and make sure you know if their will be any coverage of the race series by tv or newspaper.
Importantly be prepared with answers for the most common question you will be asked, \"what will I get out of it?\"
Your best bet is to buy a complete race car ready to go, it will be much cheaper than building up a car from scratch.
Motor racing is bloody expensive but a lot of fun and very rewarding. Now you need to decide what level of motorsport is practical/affordable for you to compete in.

Sponsorship = business arrangement of supposedly equal value for both parties.
I raced 4WD's for about 5 years and was one of the lucky few to get any sort of significant cash sponsorship. To get that I had to work to get the attention of (just local) press, crowds at events, magazine editors, forum managers etc. You have to run sponsors days taking them & their mates for rides etc etc. It's hard work, time consuming and you need to remember you are representing and publicising the sponsor/s at all times.
You need to persuade them that their advertising dollars (or significant discount if you can get it) is better spent with you than other advertising media.
It isn't easy to get sponsorship beyond wholesale/trade rates from suppliers in the industry.
