hard top rattles

Postby garettb16 » Sat Oct 27, 2007 7:13 pm

hey fellas.. when i bought my car it came with a hard top and i am very happy for that. however i went in an exact same MX5 NA6 like mine with a hard top and he had very stiff suspension and his roof didnt rattle at all like mine.. valid it does come off the car so i expect some creaks moans and rattles.

although i have noticed from time to time people advertising hard top latches.. and it shows the hooks which mount at the top of the windscreen. just wondered if they were slightly different or something. and made the roof lock on better..

basically how do i make it quiet? as i am about to upgrade my suspension and it rattles now.. so im expecting it to rattle a whole lot more when i change the suspension over.

Make sure that all four hard-top latches are adjusted nice and tight.
Take the lids off the two chrome boxes at the rear of the hardtop and adjust the plates (if neccessary) that lock over the frankenstein bolts.

I traced a rattle in my hard-top to a loose nut & washer on the glass window.

it's quite easy to adjust these latches, open them and you can see a thread with an hex bold on it, just turn that and it will either get tighter or looser, close the latch and see what happens then repeat until it's all snug

I've also found that sometimes it it the hook that is bolted onto the windscreen surround that sometimes comes loose as well. If that's the case you will need a star head screw driver to tighten them up. Well, at least that is what my MX has. Not sure about others.

Also, if you take the hardtop off, check the rubber grommets on the underside of the rear latches (the chrome bits that hook onto the body's frankenstein bolts). Mine came off and it sounded like someone was sending morse code from the boot.
