Stuffed Air Conditioning Compressor

Postby Boags » Sun Oct 21, 2007 10:52 am

Dearest Forumites,

I bought a second hand air con kit this time last year from a forumite who pulled it from his import. After installation and gassing it was evident that the compressor was on its way out. Switching the a/c on was like applying hand brake. :frown: The accompanying sound was somewhat like a fecked bearing whirring around.

It was very cold in the car though, so we made do with only using it when it got really hot. Over the winter the thing has finally packed up and is now deeeeeed.

So, options? Get a replacement second hand compressor from MX5 plus, new aftermarket compressor from an a/c specialist or get the one I have rebuilt.

Has anyone investigated the costs of these options before? Can anyone see a major flaw in any of the options? Any info is appreciated.

Cheers and thanks in advance. :D

Is it R12 or R134a? it will cost about $300 to convert to R134a if it isn't already - dont ask me how I know this :frown:

I would take it to an a/c specialist and have them price some options.

They converted it after I installed it last year. Cost around $250 (but I supplied the dryer).

Yes, I will be contacting some on Monday, but I wanted to get a general idea about what I should be aiming at so I don't get ripped off. :D
