You can get them from a range of places like Repco, JB Hifi and Autobarn... i would expect Supercheap to have them as well.

Is there any particular one that fills the gap better or looks better?

Yes, but that would depend on which fascia you have.
There are 2 sizes used for NA's.
Do you have a picture of the install?

That's for the earlier, narrower fascia.
Personally I wouldn't use this fascia for an install.

The later, proper DIN size fascia is far easier to work with.

This is my current installation.

Do I need to change the surround or can I simply buy and fit a pocket without any gaps?

Thanks

You don't have to change the facia if you don't want to in which case you have to get the pocket that manga had a link to or you could use a normal din size pocket and find something to fill the gap. But as Jules said the later model fasia is much better and that is what I have done to my car. Think from memory it is about $85? or so from Mazda but you have to make sure you get the later model one from 97 I think. Fits 2 din size spaces perfectly and it looks properly installed.

The latter is what I did in my car... I just used the stock 0.75 (whatever size) DIN pocket and glued a piece of black plastic from a foolscap folder above it

I guess I can't say it looks as neat as a 2 DIN size fascia filled up properly
But I did this out of necessity rather than whether or not it looked any better

You will however find that your head unit may even fit better in the updated fascia... you can see the gap around the border of the faceplate of the head unit on my install

hope this helps!

So where does one go to get one of these pockets?

Which pocket are you after? The din size pocket where you have to fill the gap is available at most automotive stores as it is a standard size. Or the larger than normal pocket that fills the gap for you is available from mx5parts.co.uk (click the link that manga kindly provided) or I've heard a rumour somewhere that mania might stock them. Hope that helps.

The uk website is a brilliant place and once you register and put it in your cart they will tell you the cost of postage before you pay anything and then you just convert over to aussie dollars. I can't stress enough how good mx5parts.co.uk are. You'll receive it generally in about 4 working days.
