This is going to be a killer!
SR20s are an awesome engine. You will have you work cut out. That said, it will not be overly difficult.
The later model ones run an electronic speed sensor. the early ones should run a cable dríven one. you may need to machine up a new cable gear to suit the mx5 speed cable (or go electronic).
Clubman = no ac or ps so you should be right there. Maybe house the stock mazda water temp sensor so your gague does't get binned. A tee on the nissan oil presurre sensor will get the mazda oil guage working.
The rest will have to be Nissan.
This is going to end up a Unicorn!

13b turbo - capacity (turbo multiplication) rules it out, plus the motor has to be newer than the car. 12a turbo is legal but not worth it
I had a 12at that made 250rwkw, all day everyday on a very safe street tune ;) more then worth it........
there is another way some of extreme guys used to go
LPG !!
no adr's ;)
i would look at a 1uz or even a 2j on gas.....
NOW that would be a KILLER conversion
& 1uz'ds are much cheaper & make more power then a std sr ;) then you have the options of forced induction & being on gas adr's dont apply

in saying that you could even put your current setup on gas & you would have the epa cleared ;)

Hey Jake, an SR20det would be a great choice for an engine swap. I recon that you are better off going with the newest one you can find though, maybe a blacktop sr out of an s14, or from an s15 if your budget stretches that far..
Its going to cost you heaps to get setup and working right, but it will be worth it when its all legal and your making awesome power. If you ever need any help just gimme a call and ill come round.
When I used to play with AE86 toyotas years ago, a mate of mine had a sr20det in his. It used to go like a bat outa hell, and it never gave him problems.. I was soo jealous.
heres a pic for you..

sprx3,
You obviously didn't read the thread
1UZ is out, requires heaps more engineering (torsional stiffness test of the chassis) and will cost heaps once a suitable manual gearbox was fitted up.
2J, too big and heavy. I still want the car to handle.
As for LPG, I am building a sports car not playing around with a bbq
I have used LPG before and it's not for this project. I want to do some tarmac rally's and don't know how CAMS would view the whole LPG thing.
The only gas I use is the laughing variety.
Ryan,
S13 is the way to go. Looking to spend less on the motor initially and put the change in to forged pistons and rods. The S13 motor has a better head design without the vvt. I would rather not run the vvt as it makes cam upgrades and other head work a lot more expensive. My bro has a S14 SR in his 1600.
That Sprinter looks neat.
You are right it won't be cheap, but the main expense is purchasing all the parts. Putting it all together and making it work is the cheap bit. I think it will be well worth it in the end. I will let you know if I need a hand, the offer is appreciated.

Its a pity about the v8, would of been great to see one in a 5. I'm sure the SR20 will work out great though and since your in Melbourne it will be easy to head out to a track day and take a look at the work, maybe it will change my mind about a V8 240Z

70 240z done!! Well almost.

The rego on the car is now suspended.
I have been working closely with my engineer and am in discussion with Speedworks at the moment regarding the best way to go about mounting the engine/box while still maintaining the clearance required by the engineer.
The pile of parts is also growing. Hopefully I will have a front cut in the next week or so. Then it is time to prep the engine/box, probably with some choice upgrades at the same time.

To update the progress so far.
My S13 front cut has arrived. I picked up a 180SX front cut with ~80,000kms on it. It compression tested at 150,150,150,145. Oil pressure is good and it appears to have been well looked after.
In fact everyone who has seen it says it is the best condition front cut they have seen.
On Saturday I stripped the front cut of everything I need and all the bits I plan on selling to recup a bit of the cost of the conversion.
It all came apart very easily, the whole thing was stripped in about 4 hours.
The plan is to get the car together and engineered, get the epa notice cleared and then the mods begin.
Once I start stripping the car to begin the conversion I will start another thread with pics and details of the work done. I am competing in the 6hr Relay at Winton on the 28/10 so currently plans are to start after that. The car has to be ready for Phillip Island on the 16/12 so time will be tight.
