How many kms should a space saver tyre last?

Postby sliq » Thu Oct 04, 2007 12:27 pm

Hi Guys,
Was driving down to the Royal National Park on Sunday and I came across a punctured rear tyre. This bizarre sized looking fish hook thing pierced my right wheel. Had to remove the wheel and whack on the spare tyre :? But at least that was an imperative for me to change all of my near-bold tyres anyways. Proxes 4, here I come!

Anyways, I'm currently using the space saver now whilst the rubbers come in. My question posed now is, how many kms should a space saver last for?
i can't brain today.. i have the dumb..

Not long. Around 300km I think. Cant remember the exact amount. There may be something about it in your owners manual.

if you brought the space saver to a tyre centre, are they able to replace the rubber on it if it's been worn down? or do you have to buy a brand new one each time?

Never seen replacement rubber for a space saver. Guess you'd go buy another one (cheap 2nd handy).

Wouldn't drive on a space saver for more than a few days anyway.

Only keep it on only as long as you absolutely have to. They are horrible.

If you want some Toyo Proxes 4s see a guy at Tyrepower Hornsby called Sujith. Tell him Bevan with the dark blue MX5 referred you and he'll give you a good price.

I've got an oldish thread about them here:

not to worry bev,
i've found a tyrepower in my area and i told them that a mate of mine called bev went to tyrepower hornsby and spoke to a guy named sujith and he got the proxes for $139 per corner lol

for three wheels and alignment its $460, not too bad.. would have been just under $600 for the full set

Replace all 4. At worste, you'd want the two fronts and the two rears to match. Spend the extra $100 and get all of them done. In 6 months time, you'll just have to replace it anyway, and then the others will wear down again, then the cycle continues.

Actually from a legal point of view, The left and right tyres must match. U can have different tread patterns front to back though. Eg Toyo proxies up front, Silverstones in the rear etc, however u cant have it differing left to right
