ignition coils - compatible?

Postby Insurgence » Tue Sep 04, 2007 10:41 pm

Hi all.

Just wondering if its possible to get compatible coil packs for the NB8A BP engine.

e.g.
- Get coil packs off other mazda / ford vehicles with same engine
- Are there aftermarket coil packs available?

Cheers!

Why? Have you killed your coils?
Unless you're having trouble (eg, misfires) or running boost beyond the strength of the coils, you should be fine.

In an NB8A I would be replacing leads before blaming the coils.

I'm currently working on this and should be finished by the end of the month.
Since boosting I'm getting regular misfires and i think my coils are having a hard time handling it. 8)
Huh?

Could have saved yourself a lot of effort and got one these.

and 2 of these.

It's what most will throw coil over plug setups in the bin for anyway. :)

Hi,

reading those links now.

i saw Npower has got coil over plug (i assume that means there are no leads and the coil pack is on top of the spark plug) for mx5 though they cost around the same price as normal coils ($600 odd)

yeah my coils sometimes play up.

the interim fix is to slowly unplug the lead from the coil pack end and it start working again.

i dont ask questions. it works ^_^

--i'll try to do the COP thing, i wonder if there is a proper write up of it. hopefully i can understand by trawling through the thread

Tried second hand? Maybe a dismantler will have them for a more realistic price.

Give MX-5 Plus a call if you don't find anything.

I have a 99 NB coil pack, low ks, for sale. Replaced it with a new one ($600) then when the problem didnt go away, I found the problem was actually a bad wire. So I still have the original coil pack. Yours for 250 cash, pick up in Glen Iris.
If you know which of the 2 coils is bad you will then also have a spare coil left.
Performance ignition in Blackburn made me an excellent set of Magnacore leads from my existing set. I'd check those before fiddling with the coil pack.
email me asap if interested.
