Headrest speakers not working

Postby Alfadog » Wed Sep 26, 2007 6:53 pm

Hi guys,
My headrest speakers are not working.

Is this a common problem? Is it likely to be the wiring or the speakers themselves? Any hints or tips as to how I might fix them?

My windscreen-frame mounted interior light works intermittently too. Damn electrical gremlins! I'm assuming this one is a wiring problem. Can't wait to try to find out where

Do you have some? They weren't standard on all cars. Undo the top of the seat (there's a zip on the headrest) and see if they're in there.

If you've got them and you've never heard them work it's possible someone in the past has either disconnected them and/or installed a new head-unit and not bothered hooking them up.

Of course, if you've got them and they've been working fine up until recently ... probably just a bad wire or connection.

Yes I do have them. What models weren't they on out of interest?

The radio is stock, but of course that doesn't mean it always has been. I've never heard them working. I'll have to have a crawl around to follow the connections and see if it's all plugged in.

There weren't on most models. I think only the very early cars (maybe) and the limited editions got them.

The wire for the speakers runs down the back of the seat and has a connection underneath the seat. If someone's had the seats out in the past it's possible they forgot to plug them back in. That's probably the easiest place to check first. :)

The standard Panasonic radio has a dial that allows you to adjust the level of sound for the headrest speakers. Have you tried adjusting that?

Thanks guys,
I'm not sure if the late model tape decks are the same as the early ones but I couldn't find any dial ... am I blind or is it not on this unit?

Revelations!
:?
I just assumed being such an ordinary, crap looking unit it would be stock. It certainly doesn't look out of place.

Thanks :)

Interesting . . .

This is the early NA headunit that I was referring to. The bottom left most dial controls the level of the head rest speakers.

Is yours an import or an oz deliverd car by the way? Might be OEM for an import perhaps? If not probably not wired in from the sound of things.

It's an Oz-delivered 1997 model.

ok, I believe that it is an OEM HU for the 1997 model. Are you sure you have head rest speakers?

Is there a fader control on that unit?
Maybe push the Audio button and see what comes up.

Otherwise, you'll have to race the wires and see where they go.
