What exhaust system have you got for your car?

Postby sliq » Tue Sep 25, 2007 11:17 am

Hi Guys,

I was thinking about upgrading the entire exhaust system on my car - I was looking to replace my headers through to the midpipe right down to the muffler tip. I was looking to replace mine with a Racing Beat muffler tip first (http://www.gomiata.com/racbeatpowpu3.html) and maybe a jacksons racing headers with RB mid pipe..

Are there any brands people would recommend? Or do people prefer/stick with custom exhausts?

Any feedback or suggestions is greatly appreciated 8)

[quote="Chris P"]With brand names like Jackson Racing or Racing Beat, you can't go wrong and you are talking a poofteenth difference in performance between those two or any other reputable miata exhaust manufacturer. [quote]

how about those reputable miata exhaust manufacturers compared to custom exhausts? is there a significant difference in power/torque?

Full Loch Stewart kit from Mikey's car. I love it, sounds superb, but it does make a slight rattly rasp around 2500-3500 RPM. This is either the zorst itself, or some leakage at the cat flange.

The rasp I believe is standard to all Loch systems - something to do with the combination of the headers and the actual engine note..... probably harmonics, pulses, pressure waves and all that.....

Hei Sliq,

Do you realise that NPower muffler is basically a copy of RB?...its now priced at $200 also...I doubt you can get custom SS muffler made up for that price.

I bought one 2 months ago and it cost $300..I didn't ended up installing it on my car cos' I sold it to someone else. From quality wise, you won't be dissapointed with it...especially now that they dropped the price to $200!!!

Header wise, I'd say look for quality item, I have seen some shocker.
The standard NB8B manifold is actually quite good, it is turbular piping not cast. So if you are going to replace them make sure you get a good one.

You should consider getting Jolt's ex systems. Trust me, those MaximWorks headers are worth the $$$. I recently bought a second hand MaximWorks headers, getting it cleaned & HPC coated ATM. I'll post some pics when I get it back later in the week.

I have XForce headers, high flow cat and Town and Country custom exhaust;2/14 inch mild steel with stainless steel reasonator and muffler, both free flow.

Makes good power and torque( and has proven this on a number of dyno days eg. I changed from a Genie sports catback to Town and country and went from 66.8rwkw to 71.4 on the same dyno a few days apart), no other alterations.), sounds great under acceleration but doesn't drone on constant throttle at highway cruise.

Catback is $550 fitted.About 5-6 Vic club memebrs are now running this set up on all types of 1.8's.

I wouldnt go too crazy spending lots of money on an exhaust. You are only going to gain a small amount of preformance, whatever you do.

I would just buy some quality headers get them hpc coated, and then get a good exhaust shop to do the cat back.

what difference would the sound be if you were to buy an aftermarket muffler and install that alone.. then changing the extractors and midpipe?

I wouldn't bother with extractors unless you are chasing the last little bit of power, the standard set up is ok.

Make sure that the exhaust shop can put you in touch with someone who has the set up they are recommending as there are plently of droning, flat or raspy set ups around and I learnt the hard way that you can spend heaps chasing down a good, efficient set up.

Otherwise just turnup to a club day and find a set up that you like.It is really important that it doesn't drone, many Mx5's do from around 2700-3300 rpm and that will drive you batty on the highway

If you are going to start with a muffler make sure it is the diameter that you will want to use later(ussually 2 1/4 inch) and a freflow design so that it is not a restriction when you later decide to complete the exhaust.

My figures show that there is some gains from a good catback over a standard one , so go for it!

Good luck,

Peter

noob question: how would you know whether the muffler is a free flow design or not?

In simple terms:If you pick it up you should be able to look through from one end to the other to see daylight!

Sometimes the pipe will be straight down the centre of the muffler, in some it will run diagonally across the muffler, Anything you can see(perhaps with the aid of a torch) as a barrier is generally what's called a baffle which reduces noise but also flow.

has anyone here used the services of HiTech Mufflers/Lambros Exhausts at Darlinghurst in Sydney? my brother recommended them to me (even though he hasn't had any first hand experience with them but his picola ferrari team uses them)
