The idle speed is controlled by the throttle plate position, air bypass screw and the ISC. How does drilling holes in the airbox affect that?
My car started playing up again on Sunday and it doesn't have any extra holes in the airbox. I switched the engine off and restarted it and it was idling OK again. I tried Craig's suggestion of spraying some cleaner into the ISC but haven't dríven it since to find out of it worked.

I took my throttlebody off and removed the ISC and gave them both a good cleanup a while ago. It's been fine since. My air temp sensor was once drowning in oil and it still idled OK so I'm not sure that's the problem with my car.
It's such a random fault I'm not sure we'll ever find the real cause. But looking at the way the ISC works it's quite possible that some gunge could get in there and stop it working properly.
