For the cost of modding an SE to make good power, you could put an AVO kit a motec, a PWR etc and jump though lots of hoops.

Then do your best to not be raped by the insurance companies.

Just get an SE ya boofhead; I will officially be jealous
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Budget $10k if you want a good reliable setup that will handle track time. For this though you should be able to get an Alloy radiator and replace all the little things like radiator hoses and other stuff that will be under greater thermal loading. It can be done a lot cheaper bit all depends on the results you are looking for.

Yep....I've failed 4 emissions tests so I've given up, returning the clubman to stock and selling it

Exactly what I've done - all the goodies from the white car will be put into the SE

Seriously Bevan, the RTA emissions test is so bloody hard to pass. You would be much better off upgrading to an SE, not just because everything is already done for you, but if you get checked for defects, you will be covered by the factory engineering, adding a bit more boost wont involve getting a major retune....that and the fact that u can spend 6k turboing your car, and it'll still only be work 24k....with an SE, it'll cost a little more than turboing your current car, but it'll be worth that much, the insurance on a modified SE is less than a turbo'd older model (the insurance on my SE is less than my clubman with a turbo....SE is 3 years old, clubman is 13....go figure)

I dont get it mate, there are plenty of modded cars, including MX5s that can pass emissions - There are even a few tuning specialists who will specifically tune the car to pass emissions...

As for the SE, you are NOT covered by factory emissions, the RTA can demand any car, modified or not, to pass the IM240 test (this is the same inservice test you'd be trying to pass with the clubman). If teh SE has poor emissiosn it's just as simple for the RTA to bump your rego on it so be careful, it's a lot of money to spend on a car to find out the RTA are pulling your rego cause you can't comply with emissiosn requirements.

Mania tuned the car, however Dave kept trying to tune it to make power and pass emissions, I could never get him to do a tune that was purely for passing the emissions test
Current: Red 04 SE (Slightly modified) - 133rwkw@7psi - Winner of the Mania Dyno Day 2008
Previous: Titanium 04 SE (Standard)
White 94 NA (Severely Modified) - 180rwkw - Runner up at the Mania Dyno Day 2007

Dissapointing :( I tend to agree with Sean here. A second opinion would have been worthwhile.

No disrespect to Dave, but he's not had a dyno or been tuning that long, I'd be trying someone like Matt @ Hitman or the guys at Ultratune in Brookvale - Both have tuned quite a few cars through emissions, Ultratune brookvale specialise in it!

Once it's passed, save the tune, then get Dave or your chosen tuner to rip it up and tune for power again.

At least you guys don't have to pay for the test up in NSW.
I think I need to contact the EPA and find out if an interstate test is admissable.

Not sure if your still pursuing this but Dave at Silverwater Auto Services is the tuning guru. He's helped out both my mates who have put both hyabusa powered clubmans and supercharged Honda engined Elises through emissions testing.

Did you have a brand new, high quality cat fitted as close to the engine as possible? My mates had problems with the busa with fuel vapour leaking out of the tank through a bad seal and causing a fail, Dave from SAS was luckily on hand at Penrith and fixed it on the spot, resulting in an instant pass.

IM240 shouldn't be that hard to pass.

Not really related but.....

Daniel from Mania and other people bag out the tuning on the SP but it was tuned to meet the NEW car emmissions test which is much stricter than the used car test and it was done with the factory ECU which was never designed to run a turbo installation. I think the guys at Chiptorque and SAS did a pretty good job with what they had to work with. Pity Mazda Aus was to cheap to chip in with an upgraded ECU.

Now back to our scheduled topic.........
