Uh oh - Isn't the coolant meant to stay on the inside...?

OK, I will only get to look at it on Sat, but many many thanks for the responses so far. UA has volunteered to come out and help diagnose on Sunday morning if the issue is still present.
OK, so that little black cap can come off/perish and let coolant out. I'd say that that size of hole would be about right for the amount of coolant dribbling out.
I have checked the oil many times, and thank feck, it isn't milky. *phew* I also never let the temp get any further than *slightly* off where it usually sits, so I would be very surprised if I cooked it.
Thanks again guys, I will update when I have more info. If you have any other ideas, please let me know.
Cheers,
Boags

Sounds like the blanking cap to me, also. If you can't find a replacement cap, chair leg tips work nicely and every store's got them. You only need a small hole in the hose to lose a ton of coolant, as the pressure the cooling system is under will force a lot of water out in very short time.
Your engine hasn't suffered any permanent damage. It's not meeting the H that would cause a problem - it's how long it stays there.

Standard NA8.

Is this little cap held on with a hose clap or something?

FIXED!!!!
Thanks for your help everyone, the little black rubber stopper was the culprit!
I even managed to get to the Mobilizer in time for a V8 supercar experience!
Thanks for talking me through it on the phone, Mikey!
You are a champion.
Took 10-20mins of swearing to get the bloody clip off, then 10-20mins of swearing to get the new on on again!
So; all in all not such a difficult job.
There were no tears.
Over and out!
