help please gearbox whine

Postby silvermiata » Thu Sep 06, 2007 5:18 pm

Hi Guys,

i need help coz i am confused from people saying different things, since i bought the car 3 months ago i have this whining noise coming from the gearbox,

when i depress the clutch, it whines high pitch when the revs go higher, and when i press the clutch it stops whining, i have done some research and most of the people say it might be the throwout bearing, so i bought myself a heavy duty clutch kit to replace the whole clutch with the bearings (may aswell change the clutch), when i went to the mechanic, he said that the sound comes from the tranny... so i am confused now, what are the symptoms of stuffed throwout bearing? If the bearings are stuffed in the gearbox is it worted to get it fixed or whould i buy a new one?

by the way, it s nb8a 5 speed with 100 000 on the clock...

If anyone can shed some light i would very much appreciate it.

Do a search for \"grinding noise on deceleration\" on miata.net. There's a thread with about 30 pages of reading for you.

I'm almost 100% sure that it's from the diff and apparently not having a damper. That is the consensus on that thread anyway.

And no, it won't be a problem as long as the noise doesn't bother you. Supposedly some ppl have had it since day 1 out of the showroom!
