Whats the other source unit? Is it an ipod adapter? CD stacker? CD in unit?
Ipod adapter - sounds like you have a dodgy connection somewhere, otherwise I'm not sure. Keep the cable away from power cables
CD Stacker - As above
CD in HU - Have you tried other CDs? If so, and it still does it, perhaps the lens of the reader is dirty. Most cd shops sell cleaning kits

Just re-read ur post...Are the speakers still original? If so thats the problem. They'll be distorting, because they cant handle much power

i spent 30min checking the wiring yesterday and couldnt see anything wrong...
SO...i decided to rewire it again by removing the factory harness altogether and that has actually fixed the problem.
BTW, its the Alpine iDA-X001 i bought from bush_pig on this forum, so no cd's at all...just ipod/usb...LOVE IT!

well finally spent a bit of time rewiring the whole damn thing.
ended up being something so simple...a couple of the unused wires from the headunit were touching....
ARGHHH..last place i looked.
well at least its fixed now.
